Best samosas I’ve ever eaten. In fact, I’m now spoiled and doubt I will ever appreciate other samosas with the same passion. Delicious buffet, too!

I’ve always heard great things about Chaula’s and I finally got the chance to try it out for myself. I have previously been to the Brighton one, but the Lewes restaurant is the original and the food is said to be amazing. We had the option of sitting upstairs on the roof terrace on our recent visit but declined as it was slightly chilly. Instead, we took a table in the corner of the main restaurant which I was pleased with as the atmosphere and décor were both lovely. The restaurant prides itself on serving the food of India, not just Indian food. It’s main influence comes from the Gujarati region, specialising in vegetarian dishes, but also serving a wide range of fish and meat based curries. We began with a round of poppadoms and then for starter I went for the king prawn puri which was a fantastically tasty dish, with a great blend of spices. Other dishes on the table included paneer and garlic mushroom and everyone was happy. For main course, my brother chose a vegetarian thali — a wonderful dish that allowed him to sample three different curries along with numerous side dishes. My boyfriend and I shared the jeera chicken and the lamb lucknovi. The lamb was really tasty but a little oily but the chicken was unfortunately a quite dry, the only reason I have knocked off a star. The staff were really friendly here and this really helped make this a great dining experience. I will definitely be back to work my way through the substantial menu!
