Coffee quality has dropped precipitously in the past year or so. The bakery is great and the cakes still good but the quality of the coffees is generally poor and very bland. The flat white and cappuccino are not recommended. Flint Owl used to be the best place for coffee in Lewes, now there are other much better places.

I stopped off here for bread on the way down Lewes high street. The lady who served me was delightful and the aubergine salad next to her looked delicious. I mean as did everything, including the guy behind the counter, but really I wanted to buy everything. At home I was so impressed I had to post a 5 star review. Their bread tastes wonderful and is so flavourful. I already have a warm summer’s day plan in mind revolving around buying a picnic worth of food from Flint Owl Bakery and sprawling over the race course. Perfect.

I almost hate to put this out there and spoil a good thing… Flint Owl Bakery is the lair of Vincent Talleu, youtube bread baking phenom. I’m guessing he’s sleeping whenever you’re awake, and vice versa, so you’ll never see him, but check out his youtube vids on bread(and other subjects) and you will understand why you are eating the best bread of your life. Lucky lucky Lewes

I first tried Flint Owl Bakery bread in Farm Café in Brighton. For me, it was the perfect bread, so when I found out that they had opened a shop in Lewes I couldn’t wait to visit. Flint Owl Bakery is based in Glynde in East Sussex. Here, they produce all their bread by hand, using little or no yeast, no preservatives or additives of any kind, and using very traditional processes. They specialise in sourdoughs but also do bloomers, wholemeal and granary loafs, and seasonal loafs depending on the time of year. As well as bread, they do a number of cakes and buns, and actually have a coffee shop on site although I didn’t try it on this occasion. The bread truly is the best I have ever eaten. Bread can nowadays come with a bad reputation, but if you eat good quality bread like this without all the hidden extras, I don’t see how it can possibly do you harm. The only downside is that it tastes so good it’s impossible to stop at a slice or two! I would recommend the fig and walnut and the sea salt and rosemary. I plan to work my way through the other varieties asap. Go, buy, stock up your freezer, and never buy supermarket bread ever again!
