Paul Clark sells all the necessary items for a gentleman’s outfitting and toilet. To your right as you come in is an attractive display of Geo. F. Trumper products, including all the necessary shaving creams, brushes, razors, props, colognes, hair pomades, and so forth. The wall is decorated with hand mirrors, and natural sponges sit in a jar. Over by the counter there is a cabinet with vintage and new men’s jewellery, such as gilt and mother-of-peal cufflinks. The rear of the shop is largely dedicated to clothing, millinery and other accessories. It’s lovely stuff, the shop is put together very nicely, with a good eye and a coherent general aesthetic, which is traditional but still cool. The shop keeper likes to chat, and in such a small space if you aren’t happy with that you might feel uncomfortable, but I would definitely recommend checking Paul Clark out. If you have a bit of cash this is a great place to find some swish goodies for yourself or the man in your life.

It has recently become an ambition of mine to write for Chap magazine, so with this aforethought I headed to Paul Clark to gather some information on what suits and accessories are available to a gentleman in this day and age. Up until the last few years all of my more sophisticated sartorial arrangements have been made by my family on my behalf, leaving me to get on with the day to day clothing decisions. My little recon mission went well, I was indeed pleased to find that here while many of the more modern cuts of suit are available the general style of the place is set a little further back in time to a period when suits were mainly worn by gentlemen rather than any caddish politician of crass nouveau-riche estate agents believing that anyone with long hair is going to be intimidated by his garish pinstriped affair from Gresham Blake. Not unlike the cartoon Mr Ben, as you enter a shop keeper magically appears, he initially offers assistance and then stays on hand at the counter beadily observing your browsing habits. It may seem a little off putting but when you take into account the value of the wares in here it stands to reason that he should like to be present while there are unfamiliar customers around. The stock selection was broader than I was expecting as they offer a selection of off the peg attire that you can simply go in and purchase there and then and there is a section devoted to the most tasteful array of cosmetics that it has ever been my pleasure to survey(and sample). Considering the quality and distinction that this place offers I was surprised that the prices weren’t higher. That’s not to say that I’m ready to commit entirely to the level of wares that this place offers yet but as a treat shop this comes fairly high on my personal list. My birthday is in July by the way.

This is a very bespoke and custom men’s formal and evening wear shop, offering clothes to a high end gentlemen’s market. While I found the service to be a little bit dismissive at times, I couldn’t argue with the quality of the clothes on offer. Unsurprisingly, such quality does bring with it a very hefty price tag, befitting the designs available. As I sought to become a real man with the purchase of a suit, I was put off by the £200 price tag attached. I’m not saying it isn’t worth it, I am sure it is. However, such prices are just too rich for my blood.

I didn’t get to have a massive look around this shop because when I went it was closed, but from what I could see on the outiside it was an incredibly trendy and rather posh, gents clothes and lifestyle number. Before you bite my head off for writing a review of a place I haven’t been in, I think this one is going to have to be more of a «look this place is here, so you make your mind up if you want to visit,» kinda review. So anyway, I would say this place would be comparable to Gresham Blake in Brighton. Ultra smart, boutique, designer shirts and suits for those who can afford to upgrade from the already expensive Paul Smith type suits.
