Great selection of beers/ciders, the best I’m aware of in the area. Good Thai/Cantonese food. Downsides: not a whole lot of seating, mostly stools, so if you have a bad back you might not get the kind of seat you need.

Happened upon this place on a quiet lunchtime but far from disappointed. I was able to enjoy excellent Thai food served by friendly staff in this charming little pub; I hope I’m in the area again soon.

Well, this is going to be a two pronged review. Let’s start with the positive. The pub is a classic village style pub. This means a natural open fire, a lot of Dark Star local ales, darts, billiards and boardgames, all wrapped up with wooden floor and rustic décor. The staff are friendly and up for a chat if you are on your own and the music is a mix of rock and staple classics from the 60’s-90’s. Very pleasant. The negative is a bit subjective and goes back to a New Year’s Eve a couple of years back. They were having a bad taste fancy dress party and we had Brightonian ideas of costumes such a suicide bombers, KKK members, Robert Mugabe and a gimp! We even phoned in advance to make sure that we weren’t overstepping the mark and we were assured that our attire would be fine. Imagine the moment we strolled in clad in our risqué attire to find no-one in fancy dress! Even the staff had only managed flares and floral shirts. Needless to say, our extrovert attempts didn’t go down too well and we managed to drink defiantly for about 2 hours before escaping before we were lynched on the common. Whether this is really a fault of the pub or us taking the bad taste theme a bit too far is debatable, but if you were going to the pub for such an event then dress down and not up! Would have been a 4 star review if not for the mis-information of the New Years fiasco.

The Stand Up is a lovely pub in the little village of Lindfield, just outside Haywards Heath. It’s a fairly sizeable place, with lots of bare wood tables and flooring, giving it a feel somewhere between contemporary and traditional. There’s a reasonably sized garden out the back, and lots of games to play when you’re there — Jenga and Cluedo being my favourites! They have a massive range of real ales on offer — I didn’t count, but I reckoned on around 6 – 8 handpumps. There was also mulled cider at a very reasonable £1.50 a glass. The atmosphere is friendly and homely, with a good mixed-age crowd.

This is one of four pubs situated in Lindfield High Street and is probably the best of the bunch if you want a non-musical social atmosphere in which to enjoy a good beer. When I moved to the village it was called The Linden Tree and was a proper old man’s pub serving a wide selection of ales to quite a limited audience. However, this all changed when The Darkstar Brewing Co took it over, refurbished it and gave it back it’s original name — The Stand Up Inn. It is now a reformed pub but still retains the feeling of a good friendly local with many regular faces — and a wide variety of age groups. The ceilings are low, the fireplace roars and there are some seats but, as the name suggests, many stand around the cosy bar. It is the quintessential English pub offering a wide selection of locally brewed, award winning, seasonal lagers and ales. They are also reknowned for their selection of ciders and perrys which are often promoted as part of a festival(with cheese). I think food is now available and there are a few tables in the rear garden which seem to have been offered for the smoking fraternity. Other events are also hosted including a pub quiz. Overall, well worth a visit if you are in the village.

This is in Lindfield, not Haywards Heath, but Qype doesn’t recognise Lindfield as a place for some reason. The beers are so fantastic, Darkstar, absolutely fresh and tasty. I had the Espresso, in fact I think I may have bought a bottle of it, and there was an Oatmeal stout when I went in that isn’t on the website, but there was a beer festival going on in the pub at teh same time, so things are a little hazy. The pub is old and charming and has all the papers and so on, but I suggest getting bottles to take away and having a picnic on the huge green(why isn’t this place recognised??)
