My brothers and I ate at the chop and ale house last night. Having heard good things we were all looking forward to it but as we left we all felt slightly disappointed. The building and the small bar restaurant are lovely and the atmosphere was great and it was really busy. But the first thing that let us down was the beer selection. To name your self as a ale house you’d expect to find a good selection of beers, especially with the ever rising popularity of craft brewers but sadly the selection only consisted of one ale and one lager. Both fine but why only two in an ‘ale house’? We all chose different options from the menu and all though everything was fine, nothing tasted bad but if you’re paying £15 for a burger or £25/30 for a steak you expect it to be something at least a little special. There was some really nice points though. The puddings were delicious and the fish cake and chilli jam started was really good. The service was again, fine. All the staff were friendly and attentive but again nothing more than you’d get anywhere else for half the price. Overall we all left feeling a little underwhelmed. I really wanted to like it because normally this is the kind of place we would love and would return time and again but sadly it just missed the mark in too many places.

We popped in last night after a recommendation from a friend, and what a great recommendation it was! We ate in The Chop and Ale House, which is situated in a little cottage building, its got a quaintness about it. The menu is not too large but does contain pretty much only meat dishes, with the exception of a few fish dishes and from what I recall only one veggie option(though it did sound tasty!) We both went for the burgers(one Cheese Burger and one Champany Burger), cooked how we both like them! They came in a nice big bun with a side salad and a massive bowl of chips to share! We managed to squeeze in a dessert as well, we shared a plate of waffles, syrup and ice cream. The waffles were light so not as heavy of a dish as I feared! Service was friendly, attentive but not in your face. I would also say it was a little pricier than expected, but saying that the food was great! According to the website it only starts dinner service at 18:30 — we arrived not long after and we got the last table!

We had a great experience yesterday at The Chop and Ale House(the pub). The burgers were soft and juicy, the blue cheese on top of them added even more taste– Chips were excellent as well. Portions are very generous, two adults and a child could share two regular courses. We were done in little bit more than half an hour. Staff were very friendly and helpful. True, it is not cheap but overall I definitely recommend the place.

I came here a few years ago and enjoyed the dinner. On Wednesday night I was entertaining three very important suppliers to my company, reputed to be the best beef in Scotland. Well I can hardly disagree with that! There was a good welcome and the menu and different types of steaks explained to us, whilst we has G & T’s. There was an interesting choice of starters, in particular one of my guest raved about the Scallops. I settled for a stilton and broccoli soup. The steaks selected were three of us Rib eye and one Sirloin, all cooked on a charcoal grill exactly as we ordered, absolutely delicious. We had two nice wines, a St Veran with starters, and Château Cissac with the steaks. Two of us managed some strawberries afterwards, and we all had coffee. Service from the waiters, and sommelier was polite and efficient. As good a meal as I have had for sometime. Now hold on to your seats, the bill was £400. ! Way over the top, even though it was a company funded dinner. The steaks typically are £40 a throw, and vegetables all charged extra. The two wines were together £76, and with the pre drinks, coffee, and a service charge(which was added without prior consultation, but described as ‘optional’, well there you have it. I was fully expecting to spend maybe £300 that evening but not £400. I am awarding 4 stars, because whilst the food and service warranted 5 stars, its is possible to get(not too far away from here) as good quality food for a lower price. I am thinking of Peat Inn in Fife, though I havent been recently. But I will be back !

I can think of few greater memories of my late childhood than visits to The Chop and Ale House at the Champany Inn with my folks. It’s a little snooty, a little expensive, but quite simply, without question, the steaks are as good as you will find anyhere in the world. Lightly marinated in a glaze that the owner has kept secret in the 30 yearsthe place has been running, these huge slabs of meat taste so unbelievably good that words really fail to do them justice. There’s no veg, no fancy sauces, just a huge slab of perfectly cooked steak, and a bowl of handcut chips in the middle of your table. There’s an abundance of cuts, but the rib-eye is probably the best all rounder. E-Bot doesn’t like steak so at the time of writing my suggestions to visit The Champany have fallen on deaf ears, but after many years of cold turkey my desire to return is becoming too great. I’ll turn her into a carnivorous steak-guzzling machine if it’s the last thing I do.

Recently re-visited Champany’s for the first time since I graduated from Edinburgh an undisclosed number of years ago… I remembered the food as being outstanding, and I wasn’t disappointed. Champany is the place to go if you love steak. Not only do they have a huge variety of cuts on the menu, but if they don’t have the cut you want you can go back, look at the cow and point out the bit you do want. A little gross for sure, but also way above and beyond normal service levels. I had the filet mignon, which was perfectly cooked. The Bearnaise sauce was also excellent. A couple of people in our party ordered the sirloin/rump cut which: WARNING — was in fact about the size of a 6 week old baby. If you order this, make sure your hungry(the first time we went here my now-ex-boyfriend had to go ask the staff for some antacid because he had indigestion from the sheer amount of steak consumed). While the steak is the stand-out, the seafood is also exceelnt. Fresh and very well-cooked. All the accompaniments were great and the service was perfect. The setting is just beautiful too: you can sit out in the garden if the weather is nice and enjoy a drink while you order, then move into the dining room when your first dish is ready. And it’s really important to get all this right because it IS expensive — our meal probably cost about how much it would have taken to actually get a 6 week old baby on the black market. But for a special occasion, it is well worth it. The food, ambience and service combine to make a truly special occasion.

Good but vastly overpriced. I have eaten here a few times in the pub /inn part. Yet to try the restaurant. If you go for the much cheaper Inn part then be prepared to wait for a table as they don’t take reservations.

This is divided into a formal restaurant and the Inn which is THE place for Steak. I don’t think I’ve had a better steak in my life-time. Not just that, the burgers, the chipsit’s all very very good. The place is small, quaint and inn-like. The atmosphere is relaxed, informal and friendly. The Inn does not accepet bookings so there may be times you have to wait for a while as it is small. The Champany Restaurant is another fine eatery, as good as some of the big players in the Capital or Glasgow. The menu is quite simply stunning, and the fish or seafood choices are fantastic. the wine selection is expensive but worth it. A treat to go to either the Inn or restaurant.

I’ve been here a few times and found it to be rather over priced for what you got. They’ve tried to appeal to the masses by having a ‘pub’ style part of the restaurant for lunches which is quaint but getting in the door you have to go down a narrow corridor past where the crockery is kept usually walking past busy staff to get to your table. There isn’t a lot of space at this end of the restaurant and I was still £12.95 for burger and chips. If I was coming here again I’d stay in the restaurant end and steer clear of the pub style end. The seafood in here is unbelievably good.
