This shop is incredible quaint and adds a more traditional feel to the aesthetics of the village. This little store offers a great range of practical bags and shoes. I’d say their fashion is marketed at an older crowd, but still, if you want a satchel that’s going to last you a long time then this is the place to visit. As well as this they also provide an excellent shoe service of re-soling. The staff are really friendly and offer great advice on this option. Backhouses always seems pretty quiet though, so I’m unsure of how it stays open. However, I’ll definitely be giving it another visit as it certainly is a quality store and a competitor to all chain businesses.

I’ve never really been sure what a backhouse was until I recently met a Canadian who referred to an outside toilet as a ‘backhouse’. Googling has also proven it to be a not uncommon surname though so we need not necessarily take the initial definition there. Of course this place has very little in common with an outdoor toilet, other than it has a door obviously. And there probably is a toilet in the back. Ahem. On topic — onto the review. If you want a practical bag, a pair of sensible shoes or a set of leather laces then this is your go-to location in Formby. They’re a bit expensive but it’s service with a smile and a conversation about how bad the weather has been lately. They also resole shoes here and do a very good job of it — a pair of boots I had resoled here have lasted almost another year and a half which was great going considering I was thinking of chucking the things out. They’re also very honest cobblers — telling my sister that it wasn’t worth getting a pair of shoes resoled as they probably didn’t cost as much as it would cost to rebuild the heels which was very nice considering they must not really get too much trade.
