An acceptable place to go for a drink in the evening, despite being a bit rough around the edges, Fogherty’s pub does have a bit of an atmosphere that isn’t to ignored. Thursdays are quiz nights with cash prizes and worth a punt at competing with the regular clientele. A good sports pub with keen enthusiastic group of locals that may take a while to warm up to students or new customers, but not particularly hostile. Average prices but worth a look from time to time despite the cheapish looking exterior.

Ah Fogherty’s, where the men are men, the women are men, the music is loud and happy-go-lucky merrymakers will offer you liquorice allsorts from their pockets. Despite appearances, it’s not a rough local that should be avoided. You could be dressed as a flamingo here before anybody asked why. Tucked just off that barren section of Smithdown Road that acts as a buffer between the bridge and Penny Lane, Fogherty’s Pub is a place where you can brazenly barge in, sit in somebody’s favourite seat, then minutes later be debating with them over what would win in a fight between a shark and a tiger. The middle-aged bands that play here are always good for a listen. Belting out classic covers and songs they’ve written on a coffee break, they make up for the fact they’re ear-canal-bustingly loud by being really rather good to boot. The young whippersnappers could learn a thing or two from the fogies at Fogherty’s.

Maybe I’m being biased becuase it’s a 30th — yes I am because it’s pretty rubbish here! But I had a crackin knees up anyway. Fogherty’s is a local pub-cum-social club and that’s pretty much what you get. We were all locked away from the rest of the elder locals in a large hall which I thought was a little prejudiced until I realised what a bunch of obnoxiuous t**ts we are when we’re drunk! Saying that, the prices aren’t what you expect from a social club — bit pricey for a pint of Guiness! However it’s very handy for any early exits to Allerton Road — anywhere worth going? — and the rest of Smithdown!
