I can safely say that my second year at University has been a lot less enjoyable than it would have been had I not have lived in Cathedral Campus. This may be because all our friends had a lot more sense than we did and chose not to live here. The rooms are absolutely, tragically small when a room is smaller than your Halls’ bedroom, you know you’ve made a serious mistake; there’s barely room to shake a stick. The wardrobe is designed for Borrowers, no well-​dressed human being can possibly fit all their clothes into what can only be described as a long, rectangular box. The ‘large’ desk space fits a laptop and a TV on itand that’s it. Trying to do work is virtually impossible especially if you’re a Uni of student. most of the other residents are at LIPA and JMU, hence shorter term times and, it seems, non-​existent exams so they’re all celebrating having parties (I have no idea how they managed to fit enough people in their house to have it considered a ”party’ but they did) whilst you’re trying to do some serious revision and a worthwhile degree. We are supposedly provided with a hoover. This ‘hoover’ makes a lot of noise like most hoovers do, but has a fundamental flaw in that it doesn’t actually pick up any dirt. Thankfully my mother is kind enough to bring my hoover from home when she comes to visit but other than that, we have to resort to sweeping the carpets and the tacky laminate floor in the kitchen with the ‘brush’. The kitchen is pretty tragic too. The hobs are electric and ours even managed to go through a period of fusing the electricity in the whole house. The fridge has got some sort of weird reservoir of water in it that none of us can get rid of and despite being used often, the freezer has now got more ice in it than the Arctic. Polar bears would feel more than at home in it. The toaster doesn’t fit normal pieces of bread in it and the cupboards all smell of damp. Plus, the washing machine takes about 4 hours to do anything resembling washing. The ‘comfy’ sofas in the lounge stick to you if you even dare to sit on them, plus there’s nowhere to put a TV in the lounge so there’s no point in having the lounge, which is basically a bedroom without the furniture. I suppose the coffee table means it must be a lounge The ‘spectacular views’ described in my case are a tree, some grass, a railing and a road. Oh, and Toxteth. I suppose by spectacular, they meant the Cathedral, which is just annoying. They will tell you it goes off once a month. It does not. I have known it go off on a Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and far more than once a month. Also, privacy goes out of the window in this house. You can hear everything through the walls and floorboards. EVERYTHING. It’s worse than halls. The bathroom is okay actually. So far so good, it’s actually not broken. But the downstairs toilet doesn’t flush, never has, and has never been fixed. Also, don’t expect your parcels to be delivered straight to your door. For some reason, they all get sent to Reception, where you have to take a little red card left for you by a postman. Don’t try and explain that ASOS deliver using couriers, you should still have got a little red card (even though they’re not Royal Mail). One last thingTHE INTERNET. Fair enough, Halls uses cabled internet. When moving into a house though, you’d have thought it’d be wireless. We were told we’d be able to buy a wireless router however, this is not the case, as the most annoying little sign up screen appears making you log in to use the internet every time you use your computer. And you can’t log in on more than one computer. It’s like 20^th century dial up in terms of speed, as well. My advice to anyone looking to live in the city centre: make sure your friends are going to be around or there’s a big group of you looking to live in the same house; don’t pay £92 a week to live in this awful, awful sub-​standard accommodation and you still have to get up at the same time as you would have to get up had you lived in Smithdown you still have to walk to Uni.
