Spiceways

This is our local indian restaurant and we often go there for good food and excellent service. There is a good choice on the menu and the waiters are always really friendly. The décor is quite good, fairly modern and not quite so garish as some indian restaurants. We often go with friends who have small babies and there is never any problem with this, in fact the waiters seem to love it. They’re also very happy to do takeout (as long as you collect). Iw ould definately reccommend this place to a friend. Especially as I’ve tried some of the other indian restauarants close by and have not been at lal impressed.

We decided to try Spiceways at Childwall Fiveways — the décor was nice, the staff friendly & attentive, the food good not great, we’ve experienced better ! My main complaint is the feeling of being rushed … we were still picking at the poppadoms when my husbands plate was whisked away while he was visiting the loo, I’d already been asked by the waiter had I finished to which I replied No this must have fell on deaf ears, so the starter arrived before we were ready for it. After the starter we requested a «breather» before the main, but this didn’t happen, our main arrived a couple of minutes later, we didn’t send it back, as it arrived so soon after the starter and without the requested breather we felt completely stuffed so both left a lot of it, unable to face any more. Spiceways didn’t provide a relaxed feel, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking to spend a relaxing time, it’s more of a «need a quick average curry» after a few beers type of place. Final moan, we arrived after 7.30pm and were surprised to find very young children seated with their family, luckily they eventually kept quiet, but this changed the ambience of the evening, although I’m not against children in restaurants I do believe after 7.30 it should be adult time, if I want to have my meal alongside noisy kids I’ll go to Pizza Hut ! Only reason I’d return to Spiceways is it’s a short walk from my door, but in reality I’d walk straight past and make my way to the Café Sekander which still holds onto it’s title as the best Indian I’ve experienced in a long time. Sorry Spiceways, calm your waiters down, slow down the pace of your service and you’ll earn another star — maybe !

A couple of nights ago I had an awesome curry, it was in a not so great area of Manchester, from the outside looks not great and inside not great. Sat at our table we could even see some of the wallpaper peeling off — nice! However, the food was just yum, I shared a chicken korma and vegetable dhansak, peshwari naan and boiled rice. Delicious and it didn’t leave me feeling full to the brim, going to bed not being able to move. Nor, the next day did I feel like I had had a curry. Total cost £22 (including two non alcoholic drinks). So not bad price. The food was great. So — Spiceways — it’s OK from the outside and from the outside — better than the place I went to in Manchester. Prices — more than my unassuming Indian in Manchester. Food — there is a better selection of vegetarian dishes. Tastewise — not as good as Manchester. So although looks wise the restaurant didn’t look great in Manchester, the food tasted really good!

Spiceways burst onto the Indian scene in Liverpool at the end of 2009, and it seemed so promising. The décor is lovely, huge portions and friendly staff — I thought it would become competition to the oh-​so popular and trendy restaurants on Allerton Road.
Unfortunately, it was not to be as only a few months later the quality has dropped so much it is almost unrecognisable. The food was cold, the curries not great — instead of the thick creamy sauces you expect, they were thin and greasy. The service with a smile turned into someone clock watching until their shift was over. Such a shame.
