I wanted to begin this review by saying that I remembered the night well but that would be a lie. Our entourage cruised the streets of Liverpool’s gay quarter, hopping from bar to bar. At some point, whispers of an idea were exchanged. ‘Curzon’ seemed to be the word on everybody’s lips. It sounded good to me. Looking back now, my drunkenness must have made me oblivious to the joke. And, oh, what a joke. We arrived at the bar soon after. It was located down one of those really long and thin alley ways that you usually ignore when you pass in the light of day. However, this was night and the neon sign blared like an emergency alarm in the blackness of this particular night. Before I continue this review, I must make one thing absolutely plain. I understand that The Curzon is a bar one visits with certain expectations. It isn’t the type of place you stumble upon accidentally. I hope not anyway. Anyway, we moved closer and entered the bar. On first inspection, The Curzon was a simple place. A very small dance area waited at the back, the bar to your immediate left. However, it was when you look closer, or for that second longer, that The Curzon’s true nature reveals itself to you. How do I put this? Let’s just say that, until this point, I had never been to a bar that displayed hardcore gay porn on television screens on it’s walls. Besides that red flag, The Curzon could actually be misconstrued as some kind of working man’s club. However, it’s closer to something you’d seen in a David Lynch/Gregg Araki co-production. Strange and smutty are two words that float from of the ooze and in to the mind. We bought drinks and attempted to dance, after being asked by a man whether or not we’d like drinks bought for us. It came pretty clear, pretty quickly, that this was the type of place closeted men come to let their hair down and attempt to meet others. Remember that scene from ‘Mysterious Skin’? It sounds rather damning, and I couldn’t say whether it was the booze or my first-timer’s fear, but it’s the only bar I’ve ever felt physically threatened at. I’m not going to bash The Curzon entirely. We revisited recently and actually enjoyed our short stay. In conclusion, The Curzon is the type of place you have to experience to truly understand. Maybe just twice though.

Um… yeah…er…can we leave now? The Curzon Club is like most other nightclubs in the city, except for the fact it shows gay porn on screens dotted around the place. The weird thing about this is that I KNEWTHATBEFORE I WENT. Sometimes my commitments to try every new place in the city can be a bit jarring and I wish I hadn’t forced myself to do it. Owing to the fact most of the walls here are mirrored, your gaze is never more than an inch away from spying unwanted televisual bollocks. At first this was funny, but as the minutes wore on I found myself learning the grain of the table with excruciating intensity. I could give this place one star but that would just be unfair, and probably pretty homophobic, of me. The gay porn ain’t for me. The downside of course is that by designating it two stars I’m basically saying ‘Meh, I’ve experienced better” and that is just fraught with a whole barrage of worse implications.

Are you a prankster? Do you enjoy scaring people? Well if so, look no further — grab the nearest homophobe and throw them through the doors of Curzon. Watch them wet themselves with fear. This is a no holds barred, over the top, man-on-man porn on video screens and leather and rubber as far as the eye can see gay club. This bar has achieved a heck of a cult following over the years, and is somewhat traditional in the sense that you’ll see plenty of over thirty-somethings in the mix occupying a more binary spectrum of straight-acting butch and camp as a row of tents femme. We hip sexually fluid youngsters these days may see no need for such starkly defined roles as this, but Curzon is about what feels comfortable for the clientele. It’s also very sexy, so be warned. The place’s hidden entrance, located up a dark passage(don’t — even — go — there) off Victoria street, makes it feel secret and salacious. The monthly LADS event is a dress coded night of skinheads, fetish, the aforementioned leather and rubber, although you’re probably just as likely to see all that any night of the week. It’s male dominated too, not that the hags aren’t welcome but they might feel a little outnumbered or tossed aside as cruising seems to be the order of the day. As well as the LADS nights a stripper appears on Tuesdays and there’s a DJ at weekends to keep things bopping. Overall it’s small, it’s sweaty, its reputation precedes it and it’s one of the most well-loved, oldest gay bars in Liverpool. An institution, certainly. But if you’re even the slightest bit of a prude, you might want to steer clear.
