I sort of feel sorry for the Other Place. Not only is the name rubbish(akin to Glastonbury’s Other Stage) but it is infused with a sad kind of delusion. That’s not to say I don’t like it. The bright orange walls scattered with quirky arrows pointing out such zany things as the beer garden and toilets make it seem like a city centre bar you wouldn’t protest upon after finding yourself in every so often. It’s just the location I find a bit iffy. Allerton Road can be a blandly soulless area and I can’t imagine the neighbouring citizens to be massively up for coloured shots of sambuca. This is a shame because the Other Place deserves its throng of revellers.

if it ain’t this place, then it’s gotta be that other place surely! Despite the name this is not really the other place… it actually is one of «The» places to dine on Allerton road. The fresh soft round bread starter I had here was from heaven and served with balsamic vinegar and olive oil still makes the mouth flow with water! I also shared a starter for under £7 of king prawns with a spicy tomato salsa and rocket salad. We absolutely murdered this starter it was delightful and for once in a restaurant the salsa was firey and in plentiful supply… Result!!! At under £15 the pan-fried sea bass as a main also hit the spot. It was cooked to perfection! Listen if on Allerton road the other place should be high on your list of eateries to tick off! It’s been trading successfully for a while and that in itself is a good sign because they do get a lot of repeat business, which is a seal of approval for a restaurant.

Other Place is one of the oldest diners down Allerton Road and has firmly held it’s place since the increased popularity of the South Liverpool area. The restaurant is across two floors, the downstairs has a small bar and a lively atmosphere, whereas upstairs has a calm and chilled out vibe. As you may well have established, tapas is my kind of thing, and Other Place just do it so well. My favourites would have to be gratin dauphinois, the seabass, and the chicken liver parfait. The staff are really friendly, and attentive without overcrowding you. A lovely evening out.

I’m not sure how I have overlooked reviewing this place for so long when I have had to put up with the many poor café restaurants that neighbour the Other Place. This restaurant has been a mainstay for Allertons diners for many years now and can still get busy well in advance of a Friday and Saturday night. Despite also serving a tapas selection — the default setting for almost all Liverpool restaurants these days — the Other Place stays ahead of its rivals through good service and a good environment in which to dine. I felt at home in here and was put at ease by the friendly staff and cosy interior. It goes to show that it is the simple things that will get the best results.
