A fairly standard city centre Wetherspoons. Full of football fans warming up before the match. The beer was rugby themed though and a decent pint of Scrum Down was had by all. On the former site of Blacklers department store which was famous apparently.

Firstly; I am biased. I am a fan of most Wetherspoons. This particular one is the Richard John Blackler named for the founder of the original department store in this building. As a youngster, it was one of the highlights of the Christmas holiday to visit Blacler’s grotto always something new and exciting. Well, Wetherspoons is neither new or exciting, but I love the drinks choices and, when just hungry but not a special occasion, I enjoy the meals. Although there were ten different handpumps today, most of them had coming soon labels on. The beers available included Peerless Brewery’s Uncle Sam, which is a very strong tasting bitter(not strong as in abv, but just in taste). There were also a few other very nice brews. The food was the usual Wetherspoons fare and, if wisely chosen, satisfies most tastes although my wife almost always goes for the salmon fillet in Hollandaise sauce with a jacket potato and salad, which is wonderful. Everywhere was clean and tidy and the staff were knowledgeable about what they were selling and very pleasant. Almost worth joining CAMRA just for this one pub; with the annual discount vouchers, I got two pints for £2.60less than the price of one pint in most pubs!

If you’re in the mood to sit in a huge, noisy, messy tavern where the burger cheese looks like dog semen and the customers all look like they just punched their way through the suit section of Matalan, then hoo-boy, look no further than this branch of the literal and metaphorical slophouse chain, JD Wetherspoons. Set in the old department store building in which George Harrison worked as an apprentice electrician, the pub has nothing besides cheapness to lure you in, and even that can be found somewhere nicer. If you absolutely must go here, then don’t.

A great huge wetherspoons in the heart of the city centre. It is really close to Lime Street station, just opposite Boots and St John’s Precinct. Similar to most other spoons in the country, cheap drinks, good offers and decent cheap food. Open I think from 10am until late at night. Taxi rank is right outside so easy to get to and from! COuld do with a bit of a revamp and is nothing special inside, but food is fine and drink is cheap so what more could you ask for? Also have the Steak club, curry club deals like the other pubs in the spoons chain.
