Late one Friday evening I found myself absolutely famished and on Kingsland Road, and went to one of my usual Vietnamese haunts. There was a 20 minute wait for a table… we had to move on! But where to go amongst the many other restaurants nearby? My friend and I chose Anh Do as the menu looked enticing and the décor was cool. Luckily it was a good choice! The interior has a sort of bamboo-Miss Saigon feel. I was a bit skeptical at first as the service was a bit slow… actually they are pretty busy but I think slightly understaffed. Regardless, the waitress was very nice and we got some delicious summer rolls shortly. This was followed by an absolutely amazing scallop-in-the shell starter. The hot and sour soup was good but more mild than I prefer. This was followed by the Green Papaya salad, which was crisp and tasty. Overall the portion size is good, not as large as some of the neighboring restaurants but the quality is very fresh and the prices are comparable. I shall return.

Go to Kingsland Road for Vietnamese food. The street is lined up with Vietnamese restaurants galore. Anh Dao is particularly special. The staff made an authentic dish not found in their usual dinner menu: Canh Chua(a tamarind-based soup). Have it with rice to soak up all of the intricate flavors in the broth and you’ll know why this is comfort food Asian-style. Also, if you’re Filipino, you’ll get a kick out of the fact that they serve San Miguel beer.

We like our Vietnamese food and we were told that Kingsland Road is the best place to go. We took the tube from across town and chose this restaurant from a good selection of restaurants. We have made a lucky find. I have some straight to the nearest library to write my review! We both had noodle dishes for lunch. I had one with pork and spring rolls which was filling and delicious. I like how you get the soup/sauce in a separate bowl and you can add to the noodles to suit your taste. I had green tea which complemented the lunch well. We got juicy orange segments(or is it sectors?) with our bill. The service was friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. Granted, there were only us and one other table(of 4 people) there, so it may have been different if it were full. But I’m prepared to rate them well based on this experience. If the other restaurants on the street are like this, then we may just have to move apartments! I will be coming back here to try other dishes on their menu.
