I wanted to like this place, I really did. I ordered a peanut butter milkshake, the waitress had to go out and buy milk for it! The pork pibil was okay, but just okay. The pork ribs and chicken wings were both bland and tasteless. I won’t be going back.

I’m a little confused about what this place is trying to be. The name of the restaurant suggests a BBQ meaty place, but the menu was more Mexican than anything, which is a bit confusing. The décor is a little confusing too — I think they’re going for that unfinished warehouse type style that’s in vogue at the moment, but it just looked unfinished and a bit grotty rather than cool and contemporary. This rough around the edges look was reflected in everything from the fact that the music was being played on someone’s phone, which then rang, so the music was interrupted by a ring tone. The staff spent some time seemingly debating what music should be played, so tracks were being stopped and started part way through, and it was waaaay too loud given that my boyfriend and I were the only people in there at about 6pm. We weren’t there for a two person rave! The food itself wasn’t great. The pork pibil was ok, but nothing more than that. The wings and ribs looked amazing when they were brought over, but they were almost completely tasteless, much to my surprise. My boyfriend ordered a peanut butter milkshake but it mostly tasted like milk. The whole experience made me wonder if anyone who works there has ever actually tasted the food they serve. It was really disappointing, I don’t think I’ll go back.

Brisket is a BBQ place with a nice bar area and a modern feel. It stands out in the area as being somewhere quite nice so we decided to give it a go. I went for the pulled pork tacos with a side of Mac and Cheese and some sweet potato fries. The mac and cheese was massive and cost very little. Not having grown up on mac and cheese I wouldn’t consider myself an expert. The sweet potato fries were OK too and the pulled pork was a mountain of nice soft juicy meat. The tacos, however, were really tough flour tortillas that seems to have been baked to within an inch of their life. Just trying to bite through them caused a dollop of pork to fly across the table. It was hard enough eating my food full of juices off a bread board(and if you’ve been paying attention over the years you know how I feel about serving food on anything but plates). And these board were so special that for the waiter to collect them at the end of the meal he had to slide them a little off the table potentially pushing that food you didn’t manage to keep on there onto your lap — this did not happen to me as I had cleaned it up before the board was removed. They serve a selection of beers but for £4.25 you only get 2⁄3 of a pint(that’s two thirds if you thought I was saying 2 or 3). That’s very expensive even for London and Finsbury park isn’t even central! If you’re not up to the maths that makes these draught lagers/beers almost £6.40 a pint. So sorry brisket, as much as I liked your pork and you are generous with your sides, I don’t think I’ll be coming back. Pour full pints, get some plates in and don’t make eating your tacos quite a messy challenge and I may reconsider.
