This place seemed absolutely tacky on arrival because the décor is less than appealing(big mirrors, glitter, velvet couches, ew) however, the dancing saved it for me. The dance floor was certainly crowded, but it was almost all students who were out with big groups of friends, so it was easy to enjoy. I would not recommend arriving here completely sober or early.

To be honest, I don’t really remember that much about Cheapskates– after all, the drinks WERE80p each. Sounds too good to be true? It is. The 80p drinks come in little tiny plastic cups, slightly bigger than a shot glass– yet my vodka sprite had less vodka than a shot. There are about a million people crowded around the bar, so you have to wait around half an hour to order a drink. Which is why I would order about 5 drinks at a time, and then down them all. The club is a cheap strip club all other days, the interior is tacky, there are mirrors everywhere and the floor is carpeted(which means that they confiscate your chewing gum as you enter). And if you’re a smoker, the smoking area is an… interesting experience. You wait around half an hour until your group is let into the smoking area(they let in about 20 people at a time). Once you’re inside, a scary woman in a long leather trench coat blows a whistle and tells you to sit down on the bench. You have 10 minutes, and you’re only allowed to smoke one cigarette. Stand up, and she’ll blow her whistle. Try to light another cigarette, and she’ll grab it out of your mouth. I’m not joking. It’s like a concentration camp.

Cheapskates is something of a student institution. It is a on on a Wednesday night in the Moonlighting club on Greek Street. The club is quite seedy and trashy in décor and atmosphere, though somewhat inexplicably on the way in there is a picture of Stevie Wonder there. Cheapskates’ main merit is that the drinks are incredibly cheap. The music is incredibly cheesy and the crowd is drunk students, which can be fun if you are a drunk student or are feeling particularly nostalgic. This isn’t a good night or club, but if you’re at a certain point in your life it can be a lot of fun.

Cheapskates is embarrasing and amazing. I got thrown out of this place on my 20th birthday, the last thing I remember having was a gin and tonic, which no doubt costed about 1 pound. Yes that is how cheap drinks are. Beer aswell. Good and very bad. The décor is really rubbish inside, mirrors, glitter, plush carpet and big sofas. The bar men are seedy, the dancefloor gets packed but it is always with people who are out to have an awesome night, and are not too bothered about appearing cool, or are out to be seen. Go with lots and lots of friends and you will have a great time!

Cheapskates is the ultimate student club which is saying something considering London is not the most student orientated city in the world. The club night that is put on by Moonlighting every Wednesday is where you are bound to find the majority of students that are on a budget. The whole gimmick of this place is that every drink is 80p all night long. That combined with good, mainstream music including old school hip hop, disco, classics and indie makes for a pretty good time. Some of my more cynical friends say the drinks are watered down. Whether this is true or not I’m not sure. They have always done the trick for me but maybe I’m a lightweight! Of course, the problem with drinks being 80p each means the bar is always rammed and you could be in for the long haul when waiting for a drink. The whole place makes you think you are at a student party, plastic cups, sticking to the floor, music that makes you dance like a complete moron but surely that’s what we all need once in a while?! Opening hours are 9pm-3 am and entry fee is £6, £4 with flyer and NUS cards are valid.
