Chubby Changs

Chubby Changs (‘CCs’) was a replacement for a visit to «My Old Place» by a group of 12 of us. My Old Place, while good has gone a little downhill recently and the service especially has taken a turn for the worst, (why must nearly all good Chinese Restaurants that are reasonably cheap have poor service?)
Anyway, so we booked into Chubby Chang’s which at the time of writing is around 3 months «Old» and situated in what appears to the the site of an old, but small pub. By rough estimates I would suspect 30 – 40 covers maximum which is just right for a friendly atmosphere and good service with attentive staff.
So, what does CC’s do that’s great?
a) The food of course. This is really close to being mainland food. The menu contains both common components such as chicken, pork or beef dishes but it’s also perfectly possible to get chicken stomach, duck tongue, frog’s Legs and so on.
On the subject of the food, we had quite a lot and the portion sizes are good. Of particular note were the following:
a) Home-​Made Dumplings (yummy!)
b) Big bowls of homemade thick thick noodles with beef or seafood.
c) Aubergine and Pork Mince
d) A cold Chinese style salad (quite spicy)
e) Chinese homemade bread with meat and springonion to put inside and turn into a wrap.
All the dishes were good, some were a tiny bit spicy for my Western tastes, but with copious cheap beer and cheap Aloae Vera drink (Try it if you haven’t, awesome spice quencher) was able to enjoy. My Chinese wife loved it, so it was obviously pitched at the right level for her.
So, what else do they do good?
b) Service! God, it’s great to have a place with attentive staff who know their menu. This was probably helped by the fact that the owners were on-​site and helping out. I am not sure if this will continue, but I hope it does. They were very polite and helped us design a menu (12 people ordering would have been a nightmare!). I wish them best of luck with this new restaurant.
c) Price… For 12 people, with around 18 – 20 beers, as well as Tea, Aloae Vera and all the dishes the bill was an amazing £180 or £15 per person. That’s value that is great in London, it allows more people to try great food and allows a greater range of dishes to be tried. I do hope they make enough to keep the prices around this level as it’s the kind of place I’ll keep coming back too (Alas for my 90minute commute to get there!).
So in conclusion, a gushing review, but merited by the restaurant that did everything right on our first visit. Best to visit in 3s or more probably so you can get a range of dishes, but if you know you want dumplings and noodles then a single or couple can also have fun :)
