Always fresh fruits and vegetables. I like coming here with my wife for our weekly shopping. We usually come on Friday and I can say it can get pretty crowded. Anyway, the quality goods are worth it.

Want a taste of real, diverse, working class London? Like a bargain? Then you can’t go wrong with Church Street Market. Just a stone’s throw from Edgware Road Station and right at the heart of the Arabic restaurants and shops that dot Edgware Road this is an old school London market with a multicultural flavour. You won’t find organic cheese stalls or Artisanal breads here but you will find; fresh food from all over the world, household goods, luggage, clothes, knick knacks, toiletries and cleaning products, fabric and more besides all at bargain prices. Check it out, soak in the atmosphere and enjoy a truly unpretentious corner of London.

Though it’s located near some fancy neighborhoods, this is a low-budget, no frills market that offers little in terms of trendy food purveyors or cool vendors. There are no arts or crafts or cupcakes or cheeses. There are socks and cabbage, and ladies in burkas feeling up carrots. For much of the week, there are about 2 dozen stalls, half of which seem to be selling the same stuff… the same veggies, cheap clothing, expiring seafood, etc. If you want a winter coat for 20 quid, this is your place. Or a cod head with glazed eyes. On the weekend, there are about 60 stalls selling pretty much the same things. Instead of one decent kebab vendor, there are 3. Instead of one stall selling seafood that needs to be cooked that day, there are 4. Otherwise, there’s not a redeeming thing about the market. The street is also lined by many stores also selling cheap goods/kebabs, so I kinda wonder what’s the point. I actually waffled over a 99 pence plastic veggie rinser from a local shop versus the 2 pound metal veggie rinser from a stall. I went fancy. As you head towards Edgware Rd, the area increasingly caters to a Middle Eastern immigrant crowd. Towards Lisson Grove, there’s a bundle of shops(not stalls) selling designer furniture and antiques. In short: There are lots of street or greenmarkets in London attracting some cool vendors selling food or other craft products. This is not one of them. But it might be the king of crappy/cheap markets.

Marker works from Monday till Saturday. Its a great place, although it gets crowded in the weekends. I buy almost all of my vegetables here, because they are always fresh and the prices are more than good. Especially the £1 basket offer for fruits and vegetables in season and I can say that the best day to come shopping here is Saturday. If you are looking for fresh fruits and vegetables, this is the place for you!

The market is open Monday to Saturday. I usually buy my fruit and veg from here. Most of the stalls do a bowl for £1 which is excellent value. On a Saturday you’ll also find stalls selling clothes and linens and household essentials and tools. And if you’re hungry, there are plenty of cafes dotted around the area or you can buy fast food from catering vans. If you get to the market early on a weekday morning, you can buy organic cakes and coffee too.

Best day to come to Church Street Market is Saturday when it is in fullest swing(closed on Sunday, trading from Monday to Saturday day time but rather quiet between Monday and Friday). Primarily serving the needs of ethnic minorities resident in the vicinity(Somali, Pakistani, Muslim countries), there is great variety to be had for all. I love coming here to check out the £1 a basket offers for fruit and veg in season. There would be enough in a £1 basket of cherry tomatoes to make a fresh pasta sauce for 3 people(or 2 generous portions)!! This is credit crunch busting indeed! On Saturdays there is one particular stall which sells fruit and veg in bulk i.e. whole boxes or trays for excellent prices. I once bought a whole tray of in season figs for £4(normally 3 for £1) and there were no less than 15 figs in the lot. Do shop around in this market, walk around it once first before committing to any purchase. Also excellent for low cost household items like plastic buckets and colanders. Why pay more elsewhere?

This place is great for a bargain, is quite packed on the weekends but worth it in the end. The market stall holders are always willing to barter and have quite good quality merchandise.
