Walked quite a bit to this shop, had beef pies with mash and parsley gravy. Tasted like lamb to me which was fine. The lady’s accent reminded me of the movie Sweeney Todd. I didn’t find any strange bits in the pie so all was good! Wish I could bring some home.

Lovely pie and mash shop, run by the locals. I had a steak and ale with a side of mash and it was delicious. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back for a quick lunch.

This has traditional written all over it! Sometimes when we go there, people are queuing right out the door! Pies are meaty, with the excellent pastry encasing them. Mash is soft but not mushy. Gravy just hits the spot. Other options on the menu are liquor, veg, and eels. Go there if you ever get the chance — highly recommended.

For a proper cockney meal, you’ll find nothing more traditional than good old pie & mash. I like pies and I like potato so I was immediately onto a winner. On ordering I received two steak and kidney pies a big dollop of potato and I was happy. My concern started when my plate was lathered in green snot like goo. Reassured by colleagues that it was a parsley sauce called liquor, I tucked into my first pie & mash experience. I really enjoyed it. All three of the items on my plate tasted great and combined well. What made it better was the cheap cost. As I heard someone say«Cheap honest food.» They also serve stewed eels that I absolutely would not be able to stomach. With the simple surroundings, simple grub and good honest folks seated around me, I have to give Cockney’s top marks.

The pie and mash here is indeed Cockney. It is amazing. And filling and warming. The sausages are of a very good quality. The mash has lumps(which is a good thing!!) and the onion gravy is strong and satifying. Go for the Cumberland sausages for pure flavour. For its location, Cockney’s is ace, a hard day of Portobello shopping deserves classic Brit indulgence of course. And it won’t hit your wallet too hard. The décor is minimal, fuss free and the owners are friendly and willing to give you a massive portion if you smile.
