there’s actually two store fronts– love the one to the right where they sell herbal remedies but the whole food store to the left was less of a favorite of mine. Theres nothing wrong with the store, they actually stock a lot of organic products but I had a very rude encounter with one of the cashiers-so other than that this place is awesome.

When it comes to health food stores I’m very picky. That’s because I’ve been studying herbal formulas, complementary medicine etc for years, I have an obsession with health food stores and have visited them in dozens of countries and cities, from Los Angeles to Spain to South London. Baldwins is absolutelyTHE best health food store in the UK in my experience. Amazing choice of herbs, tinctures, supplements and other health care products including an extremely reliable, high-quality and reasonably-priced range of raw Chinese and Indian herbs/barks. Utterly fantastic.

Very, very special traditional old place — first stop for a range of herbal products and essential oils. Very reasonably priced. Online shop. Very knowledgeable staff and an absolute pleasure to visit. Remember this place for a range of products that are hard to source anywhere else. They have a shop next door which is really good for buying supplements and that sort of thing. There are not many places like this anywhere at all. I recommend a pint or half a pint of sarsparilla while you shop.

These people are utterly brilliant! I have been using them for over a decade via mail order, and have more recently started using their on-line order service. I have placed two orders in the last month, both of which have been handled and delivered impeccably. Baldwin’s carry a huge amount of stock including: Homeopathy Herbs and Tinctures Energy Medicine Aromatherapy Products /Essential Oils Soap Making Materials Beauty Care Products Supplements They are essentially a cornucopia of well-being, and have been operational since 1844!!! They stock thousands of products, which makes buying on-line a dream! They are also currently drawing attention to a campaign called Save Our Supplements — Time Is Running Out, which is trying to prevent the proposed Codex legislation from gaining clear passage into law. Codex is a proposition that, if passed, will impose huge restrictions on the production and sale of complementary medicines and supplements. If successful, we will see things like therapeutic doses of Vitamin B Complex removed from the shelves! Yes, that’s right! We won’t even be able to buy therapeutic doses of vitamin C in all likelihood either!!! This legislation appears to defend the interests of the pharmaceutical companies to the detriment of public health. Ah an Organic Haven! It makes my mouth water. Fresh, locally-baked bread, organic lemon curd made only with easily understood ingredients, a dozen different kinds of honey. Deliciousness at its best. Seaweed rice cakes, muesli like woah, and so much other good stuff. Walking into this place made me weak in the knees. I want it all! All! On my dinner plate. And in my lunch box. And in my bowl with milk in the morning. Too bad I can’t afford it all. Although the store doesn’t have astronomical prices and I do think it’s cheaper than Holland and Barrett, it is more expensive than your chains like Iceland or Tesco Metro. Sad but true. The prices were NOT terrible, but more than I felt like spending. On a day I feel like treating myself, however, I will definitely go back. Also, as a note, I heard one member of the staff advising a customer on nutrition, and I think he gave some good suggestions. Basic, at least in my mind which tends to have a nutrition fix, but not something all people think about — whole grain instead of white bread and potatoes, honey instead of sugar, etc. Sum it up in one word? Knowledgeable. In two? Knowledgeable and helpful. I’m going to have to go back. The only reason I knocked it down a star I price is because it’s more expensive than general grocery stores, but that’s always the case in this sad sad world. Woe is us poor organic food lovers.

In the perpetuated strangeness that is the cleaned up Walworth Road(yeah, right), lies G. Baldwin & Co. I’d been aware of them as a hobby soapmaker for years, as they’ve always done a really good line of wooden cold process moulds, and melt and pour bases too. Of particular interest to me are their essential oils; the range is incredibly comprehensive, and I’m impressed at the range of sizes they offer, hence keeping down the prices of usually prohibitively expensive oils, like Rose and Jasmine. The shop itself reminds me of an old fashioned chemist. A feast of wood and old-fashionedness, it’s actually remarkably open and airy, and a real pleasure to spend time in browsing.
