I have a deep love for all things bakery and, set on supporting the flagging British bakery trade(let’s admit it, this isn’t France which seems to have bakeries on every corner), am therefore pre-disposed to immediately buying something(usually sweet) from any bakery in the UK I come across. So I was greatly disappointed to learn that the only ‘Patisserie’ apparent in Wandsworth doesn’t actually make any of its own produce. Patisserie? More like a distributor! Knocked back, I scanned the shelves to see if anything took my fancy. Nothing. So I walked out, and won’t be returning.

I had high hopes for Honey Cake. When I walked up and down Wandsworth High Street while scoping out the area for my upcoming move, Honey Cake shined as a bright beacon of carbohydrate goodness, with its baguettes and bagels in the window and rows upon rows of pastries in its inside display cases. I stopped in expecting to get some fresh, homemade goodies this past weekend and was eager to get my baguettes, cake and cookie home. I scurried back to my flat, carbohydrate hoard in hand. The baguettes provided a sufficiently satisfying lunch, even if they weren’t anything special. But the cake, the cookie — how I was disillusioned! How disenchanting! They were bad. Stale. Wrong. They both went into the bin. Cookies and cakes in the bin! What a joke of a patisserie.

Wow. Out of nowhere comes an Italian-run café on the eastern edge of Wandsworth High Road, and it’s fantastic. I actually drove past last week, and was taken by the large glass windows revealing a bright, spacious, clean(not a given around here) café. I went in today because Tony’s was shut, and the coffee was great. I also had a sausage roll, and it was perfect for my mid-morning hunger pangs. All for £1.90. I’m coming back. The sandwiches and pastries look great as well, and there’s a high bar and stool to sit and eat. I think it’s pretty new, so give it a whirl if you live around here and fancy a quick lunch.
