IMT Gallery

Named after the famous tome by Roland Barthes, the Image Music Text gallery in Hackney occupies an interesting niche of creative production. The IMT specialises in sound art, and with a particular focus on new media work from Poland. I went along to one of their performance nights called HEADF* AND OTHER CONTEMPORARY CHAMBER MUSIC by Wojciech Kosma’s Wrong Ensemble.
I saw one of their experimental music pieces, called Blowjob, which I assumed would be a song about blowjobs, but actually consisted of a guy playing what looked like a flute, and (ahem) performing the song’s title on the instrument at the same time. As you’d imagine, recreating a classical masterpiece using this technique is nigh on impossible; but it was very funny. I’m not entirely sure that was his intention though
Reading more about the Wrong Ensemble’s mission and their connection to this space I found out that they are a group of non-​musical artists dedicated to performing musical and music theatre work. It seemed like their creative aims were more about exploring sounds and how they affect us, rather than trying to create new tunes. The event finished sharply at 10pm (they won’t let you in if you rock up late, trying to cash in on the after party vibe, like at some establishments) leaving you to go and sample the rest of Hackney’s delights.
