One of the largest Jaeger stores, the Regent Street branch stocks both womenswear and menswear. The exterior is your standard Regent Street Edwardian classical frontage, but inside they’ve tried to add some drama by a large, spiral feature staircase which goes down to menswear on the lower ground floor. It works from the lower ground looking up, but not really from the ground floor. Inside, they stock a high proportion of the Jaeger range, although spacious presentation seems to take precedence over higher stock levels. Now, I can see that you don’t want to crowd the store with stock, but it does seem a little spartan to me, and it’s irritating if they might not stock something you want in a branch as large as this. I can’t really comment on the women’s section, but menswear focuses on their line of beautifully fitting formal suits, shirts and accessories. Their suits and overcoats tend to follow classic cuts with enough updating to give a refined look that won’t go out of style quickly. In contrast, their knitwear tends to be a bit more on trend. It’s all quite pricey, of course: suits are generally £350-£550, but the quality is worth it, if you can stretch that far. Knitwear runs up to £120, but then it’ll probably be cashmere. If you can’t afford that, then it’s worth watching out for their sales, which can have up to 50% off(up to 70% in the current economic climate).

Jaeger has long been a classic label of upmarket women’s tailored clothing. At its worst it can be a wee bit on the frumpy side, or worse, the kind of clothes worn by Conservative lady Members of Parliament-Mrs. Thatcher’s clothes were very Jaeger. In recent years, however, the company has done well in moving its image more towards the kind of chic classics worn by Parisians, and even those in their twenties will find some versatile basics here– as will also«femmes d’un certain age». Tailoring is sharp and the fabrics are of excellent quality. I have found them particularly strong on coats-often they have classic shapes in unusual and vivid colours. The range of bags is surprisingly good and compares favourably in price and design with the big names like Salvatore Ferragamo and Hermes. This is a good place to start if you are looking for a working wardrobe in a conservative profession such as banking or the law or looking for an outfit for an important job interview. With the right accessories the seperates can be adapted at the weekend into smart casual.
