Meek & Wild

I read really lovely reviews about this place so went there today (4 August 2014 at 1:20pm) to get some sashimi grade fish. I’m not local so this entailed taking a bus to get there. The person who was there knew nothing and had no idea which fish was the sashimi grade fish and when prodded he finally admitted that he was standing in for someone and he couldn’t tell me anything about which fish I should get and which fish was the freshest. He said I could wait around until his boss arrived but had no idea when that would be. When I said I wasn’t local and couldn’t wait around all afternoon I asked him whether he could call anybody including his boss, he told me that he didn’t have any numbers he could call. His attitude was terrible and not at all apologetic or vaguely helpful. I left and now need to find another fish monger I can go to. I would advise calling ahead to find out whether someone with any knowledge of fish is around before going. AWFUL experience. I would give it zero stars if I could.

This is THE fish place you were looking for: Great variety, fresh fish every day of the week, and the staff combine Nemo the clownfish’ friendliness with Jamie Oliver’s cooking creativity. More than once have I left the store with a complementary fish in my bag («I want a salmon steak please.».“Alright then, but here, take some of this sea bass too, its amazing”… and amazing it was). If you look for sashimi-​fresh fish, look no further.

FINALLY a fish monger in our neighborhood! I was getting tired of traveling for fish, that wouldn’t be so fresh smelling by the time I got home.
There is a great selection! I just love walking by just to watch the crabs and lobsters squirm around.
P. S. Bring cash just in case. Their card machine likes to take breaks.

This is the only fishmongers in London that I would go to. Their fish is exceptionally fresh, they know their stuff, they’re service is attentive and they have great recipe ideas. It’s worth paying the extra to shop here than in the supermarkets.

The high street in bygone days must have been a curious place with proper bakers, butchers and candlestick makers to the fore. These days having a vibrant high street (of any kind) is worth savouring. Highbury Barn for me is just such a place and with the new addition of Meek & Wild, it has just got a little better.
The fish is arranged in the window like a beautiful seafood mosaic featuring everything fresh and tasty at that moment. Inside, the guys who run Meek & Wild have real expertise and clearly know their products well. Consequently, they are able to guide you to something sustainable and tasty for the dish you intend to create — even if you are not as expert as them. I used to be a bit scared of what to buy but no longer thanks to Meek & Wild.
