To begin, I moved to London from Portland, Oregon. (Skip now to the final paragraph if you want to mind the intimate details…) It was nearing in on Thanksgiving… a holiday that is squashed by the rampid excitement for Christmas here in London,(and of course, there’s the minor lack of the whole pilgrim deliverance/harvest/ex-colony stuff). But this holiday happens to be my favorite, as like many of us, I have more than just a little to be thankful for. To make homesick matters worse, I live in a flat on Portland Place, my tube stop is Great Portland Street Station and I walked past Portland Food and Wine on a daily basis. But lo and behold, the more I walked past this unobtrusive underdog, the more I began to like London’s version of Portland. First, PFAW is open 24-hours. If you know me and my ’round the clock peckish nature, you know this is of high priority. On top of the glorious always open-ness, they sell booze. Not just food and wine as advertised, but a fine array of «liquor store only» gems that I’m unable to get in the homeland. And finally, when things were getting really desperate, they were really there for me with Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food. A definite star-upping quality. Portland Food, Wine, Booze, Ice Cream, Midnight Snacks ‘n More turned out to be the perfect homesickness cure… if they had canned cranberry sauce in stock one cold late November evening of no importance in London, I may have just moved in.
