Red Onion is a lone Turkish outpost nestled among the many Portuguese restaurants on Stockwell Road. It looks like a normal kebab shop but the back opens onto a very high ceilinged dining area decked out with hanging Turkish lamps with dark orange painted walls . We ordered: Grill halloumi cheese starter: Nothing too fancy about this but who doesn’t like golden brown halloumi cheese? Lamb sheesh: Lamb was very slightly overcooked but tasty nonetheless Adana kofte: nicely grilled kofte with a little kick. Both mains come with two rice sides: white rice and tomato based rice dish. There is also a side of salad(red cabbage, sliced onion, cucumber, tomato, shredded iceberg lettuce, olives and grilled pepper). You can get the mains in two different sizes: standard and large(for double the meat). We opted for the large sizes which were only £1.50 more, bringing it to only £10 a dish. The service was very friendly. Our waitress’s English wasn’t great but she was sweet and attentive. It was freezing outside and she brought over a space heater to keep us warm! Red Onion is a good Turkish option if you’re not in the mood to haul a$$ all the way up to north London. It’s on par with some of the more average places up north but still good! They don’t serve alcohol. I read online somewhere that they are not BYOB either but I haven’t confirmed that myself. All the meat is halal.
