My first encounter with Rick’s haircutting services was way back when. The salon used to be on Shaftesbury Avenue and called Archive. As an idiot student, I was looking to get my hair dyed a wacky colour. Popped in to the salon to ask advice and Rick took one look at me and said I’d need a better hair cut if I was going to dye it. Got to admire the honesty! From that point on and for the next 10+ years, Rick handled cutting my hair better than anyone else. I have quite curly and awkward hair(as a guy) and Rick managed to cut it in ways that didn’t make me look like a complete idiot. This was something that previous hairdressers had somehow failed to accomplish. Even over the course of 10 years, I never felt that Rick got lazy or complacent when cutting my hair. He’d always be willing to discuss different styles as my hair changed over the years. His prices are reasonable, considering the central london location, and Rick himself is a top bloke. If you’re looking for a recommendation for a good quality, unpretentious haircut in Central London, then I have no hesitation in recommending Rick and the Rose & Crown salon.

I was there for cut & finish and I’m very happy with the result. My haircut is really impressive, I received many compliments from my friends. Be sure that I will visit you again.

I was growing my hair long for the last 2 years and it was all successful — trimming ends, keeping them nice, healthy & layered for volume. It was obviously growing — about an inch per month. When Rick heard me saying that I’m growing it long, he told me that my hair has reached terminate length and I will never in my life will have them growing longer. I didn’t agree, but since my last hairdresser has ruined the haircut(cut too much from the top) I agreed that some balancing would be ok. First time I left him, I though it was alright — my hair but shorter. Second time I came back, telling him to cut less this time, and I insisted on growing it long. He cut it the same length again! I was annoyed and he kept saying that I don’t have much to play with, and that if only I had more dense hair… I don’t go to a hairdresser to listen to a lecture on how bad my hair is(it’s not… the next hairdresser has proved him wrong!) but it’s just not nice. I wouldn’t go back there. The price is £45 which is normal for London, but for what it was — I wouldn’t pay that much.

My friend Cate took me here yesterday as I need a hairdresser when I move back to London. She has been visiting her stylist and colourist here, Maija, for five years. Cate is a manager at a major record company, so needs to look good. Didn’t have an appointment but Rick fitted me in as his last client of the day. Good sharp haircut priced at £30 and we had a lot in common with interests in travel and the vintage scene. We even went for a beer while I waited for Cate to finish. Good busy salon and convenient location. Excellent!

I wish there was an option for a zero rating or below. I would strongly recommend not visiting this salon. Its quite difficult to write a bad review on here, I feel like a crazy person given all the melodrama above. I went for a cut. The hairwashing was very rough and not enjoyable. I wasn’t happy with the cut at all. The hairdresser left random long bits in my fringe and in other places cut some strands just above my ear too short so that they fall down in a stupid way when I put my hair up. I just wanted a trim. I went back a couple of days later to ask them to tidy my fringe and tell them I wasn’t that happy. There was no kind of appology and when I questioned why it cost me £45 instead of the £40 advertised on the site, again the hairdresser just made excuses about having changed the prices and not updated the website. I think this level of service is disgusting and the salon clearly doesn’t value their clients. I hasten to add that I didn’t go in there screaming and ranting, which is probably why they didn’t care. I agree with jkr the salon is small and in need of updating. There doesn’t seem to be a till so you can’t pay with card and they don’t give receipts. Rick, you may be a lovely guy, but you should have a think about who you employ or give your staff some training. Needless to say, I won’t be going back

Reading the reviews from Australia, I took a chance at leaving my hair in the capable hands of Rick and his crew. I wish there was a Rose and Crown in Aust. We need one. I went in for a dramatic colour change and style cut and was so thrilled with the result. They really knew what they were doing and it was done with alot of care too. Wish i could go back. thanx guys :(

I dont understand what all this fuss is about??? Service — below average(beware: water is either cold or hot), cut — standard, nothing special, salon –small & in need of updating. Frankly, it makes me wonder how genuine those fantastic reviews are???

after hearing all the great reviews on qype i decided to try this salon out. I went on a day where only one lady was in the salon,(the rest of the people was at fashion show). She was very friendly and i booked a appointment with rick the owner. when i did go to my appointment he was busy snipping away another clients hair. I waited about half a hour for him to finish the previous client. Rick is a lovely guy and he talked about his family and holidays. the actual haircut was average, he helped tidied up the hair, but i found it quite overpriced for £45. but i give ratings for service! 1st class!

I have been visiting Rick since my office was just round the corner. We have since moved further away(and surrounded by Soho salons) but I — and several colleagues — still head back to the Rose & Crown every time Great haircut, really good value and Ricks encyclopeadic knowledge of Soho drinking establishments are all reasons to visit. Would recommend to anybody!

Went here today after reading of others’ good experiences. Popped my head in and asked if I needed an appointment, 5 minutes later, I was in the chair. Rick spent a good amount of time saying what was wrong and what needed doing. Emerged half an hour later happy with the result — enough said really! Rick said that he’d had quite a lot of interest through Qype which was obviously paying dividends. One other point — it can be hard to find through Google Maps, etc. — halfway between Leicester Square and Covent Garden Tube stations, in a road to the side of Stanford’s travel shop. Easy peasy!

Went here the other day looking rather like Wurzle Gumage’s younger(prettier) sister, which is not good. The task of fixing it was left to Mya and Rick. firstly rick gave me a new do which is fab, then it was up to mya to colour my hair. considering the state it was in i had a feeling it may go green but the coulour turned out great. no more frazzled hair and i left the salon a truly happy customer!!!

Cracking hair salon which I like a lot because it sounds like a pub. Rik is a fascinating character who has mated around with many of Manchester’s musical heros, and knows everyone in Soho. There’s a fish tank with 2 fish, decent tunes on the sound system, and the results aren’t half bad either. Great stuff.

After the debacle that was my experience of getting my hair callously lopped off at the Toni & Guy academy, my fairy-godmother in the form of Rick from the Rose and Crown appeared to make sure I would get to the ball — and not in the guise of an ugly sister — as he very kindly offered to fix my hair for free. I arrived in my pumpkin carriage(better known as the Northern Line) and strolled down a very busy Long Acre which was jam packed with Christmas shoppers and tourists and found refuge from the madness in Rose Street. A quaint, quiet wee street with a slight Dickensian air to it. The small, independently run salon was a breath of fresh air from the faceless anonymity of the big chain salons I’ve patronised in the past. It was obvious from the outset that Rick knows about hair and he took a good look at mine and had good chat with me before whipping out the scissors. The result is that I’m now delighted that my hair no longer makes me look like Tina Turner circa 1990 and is very pretty, and I’m ever so pleased. Moreover I feel confident that should I ever have any further hair disasters or even small queries; I know exactly where to go. I will certainly be recommending the Rose & Crown to whomever shall listen and I will definitely be returning whether for a new do, colour, manicure or massage(yes, they do all that in one cosy wee place! Not in the same room, there are different rooms, obviously.) Staunchly recommended for those who find it difficult to trust hairdressers and for any hair catastrophes the personal touch here is hugely reassuring.
