***Stitches has gone the way of the Dodo, I’m afraid to say. An estate agents now occupies the space. I believe that the sister store, Sisters & Daughters, over in Blackheath, is still going strong. Stitches has a tidy array of gift ideas for the women(and some discerning men) in your life. Emma Bridgewater mugs and bowls, fancy French milled soaps, continental clothes, and the occasional vintage find-silver plate wine key, glass jelly mould-are all here for one’s perusal. I love going into this store even when it’s not the holiday season.

I was intrigued to see exactly what this shop was after walking past it many times and seeing the delightful window displays. It is clearly a shop aimed at women and with a girlfriend and a mother to buy Christmas presents for I decided to give it a go. Once inside I was a bit lost. It sold lots of lovely bits such as kitchen items(pots, china, novelty tea-towels etc) and decorative items for the home(scented candles which made the shop smell wonderful, pictures, soft toys and frames and ornaments). The items were not the most expensive I’ve ever seen but not the cheapest either. This is not for people shopping on a budget. For me this was an unsuccessful trip. Not much in the shop jumped out at me and those items that did(namely the scented candles) I knew I could find them a little cheaper elsewhere. The shop is small and the lady who worked behind the till was friendly and welcoming. Luckily she also let me browse undisturbed and did not hassle me into buying anything. If you are looking for a gift for a woman then Stitches and Daughters is definitely worth checking out, even if just for inspiration.

Stitches and Daughters is a great place for buying traditional gifts for women and children. Perched on an extremely busy cross road in Greenwich, from the outside the shop looks absolutely beautiful — it has a dark, rich panelled exterior with multi-paned windows and gold signage, and the window display is constantly adorned with seasonal decorations, cards and candles. The inside of the shop is similarly decorative– though not cluttered, it is busy and full to the brim of brightly coloured gifts. In the children’s area there is a large white dresser, with soft toys, accessories and illustrated books stacked on all of its shelves, and inside its drawers. Elsewhere, in the women’s section classic, simple clothes are hung inside a wardrobe whilst cake stands and hand painted ceramic mugs rest upon its shelves. It is a very friendly shop and whilst I loved the aesthetics of the shop, I was slightly disappointed by their stock and could not find anything that I liked apart from some handmade Christmas cards.
