Nette Bedienung. Jederzeit wieder.

Went here for Sunday roast when visiting London for the first time. Pretty delicious and served with some turnips, potatoes, and a yorkie. Price was reasonable for the food. I’ve gotta say that my favorite part was the gravy — yum. I could bathe myself in it, it’s so tasty!

Thought we would venture out of the neighborhood for a Saturday night adventure and eventually arriving in Notting Hill after the majority of antique shops had closed and the tourists had ventured off. This is a busy but not fussy pub with welcoming staff who were friendly and helpful. The food was priced ok so after getting a couple of drinks we ordered our mains. I took a Southern Fried Chicken with fries and slaw. My other half had a burger. As I say the food was reasonably priced — the chicken did come out with an appearance of too much fried(it was bordering on being returned) but the chicken meat itself was still tasty and wasn’t dry. The serving of slaw was a bit lean with the small serving pot only half full. The slaw itself was somewhat drowned but tasted ok. The burger itself looked fine but was on the expensive side once a few options were added. Ok for casual pub food.

Dear Fellow Foreigners This was our last day in London. Parting is such sweet sorrow. With our flight leaving at 5:00, we had some time to kill. My wife was determined to get us to a Sunday roast, but we wanted to stay in the area. Hence, based off of Unilocal reviews and especially photos, we decided on Sun in Splendour. We got there about an hour before Roast, which started at 12, so we killed some time with some hot drinks. They put a lot of love into them, and I can honestly say that was a damn good latté. Then we came to our senses and got some beer. Great selection to choose from, and they were able to recommend some based off of our tastes. Spot-on recommendations! The food had room for opportunity. We got a simple meal: cinnamon sourdough toast(simple and satisfying), the Sunday beef roast, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. The beef roast was dry and very overdone, which was disappointing because the pictures from previous Unilocalers showed a juicy, medium to medium-well cook on it. The vegetables, gravy and potatoes were delicious, however. I’m guessing we caught them on a bad day. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was deeee-lishus! I ate it all up, and cleaned the plate, too. Definitely a great way to top off the meal. Although my wife thought it was too sweet, I gladly took the responsibility of easing her burden by eating it myself. If I could, I would come back again to try on another day. I can tell the flavors are there, but either the temperature was too high or the cook time was too long. Otherwise, it was a pleasant way to spend our last afternoon.

I could write pages about the delicious sunday roast we had here, but I won’t. It was somply delicious and worth recommending. We had a nut and vegetable pie and chicken roast which were both delicious, as was the peach and rasberry crumble:-). Don’t forget to try some of their delicious pale ale’s.

Great Sunday roast! I had the veggie nut roast which was delicious and filling. Vegetables were nice(apart from the odd undercooked carrot…). Others had beef which was tasty if not a little chewy at times. Desserts? Yeah they were okay! Good service, nice spot and very reasonably priced(£12ish for a roast and £6ish for dessert). Would come back again if I’m in the area.

Great value for a Sunday roast. Roasts cost £12−15 and you get a tasty, large portion for that money. All of the other Sunday roasts in the area charge £17 and up which is a bit crazy. The roast beef was yummy, though had a few tough bites. The Yorkshire pudding had some herbs mixed into the batter but that was just a nice treat. The gravy was clearly the star of the plate and I made sure to soak up every drop with my meat. The nut roast was also really nice and very filling for any vegetarians out there. Though we were quite stuffed from the roast, we sill had enough space for some dessert. The sticky toffee pudding was warm, gooey and everything you’d want from the dish. Other friends tried the salted caramel and chocolate cheesecake and the chocolate brownie and were not overly impressed. Service was good, ambience friendly, and overall a wonderful Sunday roast.

I was convinced that this pub was going to be a tourist trap based upon its location at the end of Portobello Road. Was pleasantly surprised to find that they offered a fixed price lunch menu(£10 for two courses or £13 for three). We were served by a friendly waitress who informed us that they didn’t have any ales on at all which surprised me as this was a Friday lunchtime. I opted for gammon, egg and fries. The gammon was lean, thick and flavourful. I chose Vanilla Pod Ice Cream with crushed amaretto biscuits for dessert. This was nicely presented as was the main course. The service was very slow(there were only two people to cover the bar and serve all the meals). We requested ketchup and mayonnaise and it took about 10 minutes to materialise. The desserts took a while too. I wasn’t fond of the décor as it appeared scruffy(shabby chic?) and the restaurant area was chilly. Aside from the fixed price menu, it seemed expensive(£4.90 for a pint of beer!) but was soon full of customers. Not a bad option if you’re in the area.

I’ve been to the Sun in Splendour many times over the past 5 or 6 years, though it’s not my regular. Tonight my wife and I went for a change from our local and boy, were we disappointed. Gone are all the wheat beers on tap due to a «change in the beer line up» I was told by the barman annoyed by the query, despite having no one else at the bar to serve at that moment. Really? From two/three wheat beers to none? Couldn’t they keep one for wheat beer lovers who were accustomed to the selection and a reason to drop in? I asked for a wine list to choose a red for my wife and was told«we don’t have a wine list», and he proceeded to name the four types of reds they have generically by the glass. Of course it’s harder to make a decision when you’re only told the type and don’t have a list to see the winery and price per glass. It came out to £13.50 for a large glass of red and a pint of London Lager. This seemed expensive even to this jaded Londoner, especially considering the generic shiraz I ordered my wife was nothing special. We ordered food next. While my short rib and fries were OK, my wife’s burger was like a hockey puck, only drier and denser. We had to send it back(which I hate to do because it’s kind of telling the kitchen«you’re cooking sucks»), but we did. 15 minutes later the replacement hockey puck came, which was slightly less puckish but still the«single worst hamburger» my wife can recall eating. We skipped pudding/dessert based on our underwhelming experience thus far and vowed not to eat here again. I’ve seen various changes in menu, staff, décor and menu yet again at the Sun in Splendour over the years. They never really seem to get it close to right in the food department. Bottom line is, I think they’re more content to be a mediocre tourist pub at the bottom of Portobello Road than a local to be really proud of like the Ladbroke Arms, which is a pity. There are already plenty of mediocre tourist plonkholes around already and very few special pubs I’m compelled to give my money to, least of all this one.

Bathe me in the Sunday Roast. All hail the Sunday Roast. All I want to eat is Sun in Splendour’s Sunday Roast. Half kidding… Also the fish and chips was the best I’ve had in London. So. Good. Bad jokes aside, the staff was extremely accommodating even with large parties and me having no reservations. My only complaint was that it was cold out… can’t wait until it’s summer to try out the patio.

As I work near Notting hill, I’ve walked by this pub on many occasions, but hadn’t stopped in. I was very pleased to finally pop in on Saturday evening with a friend. The pub had a collection of what some might call a haphazard collection of furniture, but the overall atmosphere is cozy and welcoming– and warm, exactly what we needed on a cold winters night! The mulled cider with a shot of rum was lovely and fresh, staff was super friendly and the only food we had(chips) were crispy and delicious. Great local spot, with a very Christmassy feel!

Cooler, typischer, englischer Pub. Verschiedenste Biere vom Fass(London Lager, Brooklyn Lager, Heineken, Veltins, Camden…). Hier findet jeder sein Bier Die Bedienung ist sehr freundlich, die Musik könnte etwas lauter sein. Gegessen haben wir nichts, an den anderen Tischen sah es aber sehr gut aus.

The chocolate brownie dessert was pretty much the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. I couldn’t hide my enjoyment which shot me in the foot because it then had to do rounds around the table. But everyone agreed. Lovely atmosphere, great drinks selection, smiley staff and great British grub. I celebrated my birthday there when the pub was sun-filled so may be a little bias.

A neighbourhood pub that attracts the chic locals and the visiting tourists. Not much on offer beer-wise but they do tend to have Portobello Brewery on cask. Prices are average for this kind of place, so you’re looking at upwards of four quid per pint. There aren’t many good pubs in Notting Hill(for the beer geek, anyway) so I suppose this spot is a good as any.

Went here last night, the place was full but not over crowded. Thankfully we attained the last table. The ambiance is nice and the crowd were lively. It’s what you’d except from a decent pub. It was a nice sunny day yesterday but for some inexplicable reason the garden was closed and for that I’m docking a star.

Solid pub with a classic dimly-lit ambience. Nothing too extraordinary here. They have fruti, which is strawberry beer(and I love it, I don’t care what anyone says). Got a fish and chips here, with mushy peas. I was quite happy with it. Certainly above average fish and chips.

A really nice place to grab a pint and burger after strolling all over Notting Hill. Sweet and patient Polish barmaid, classic fish& chips, and very cool secret garden, with roof. What to ask more from British pub?

I am giving this pub a 3 stars because while I enjoyed the company I was with, this was just a typical British pub in my opinion. Highlights: — It is conveniently located. Just about a block or so from the Notting Hill Gate Tube Station. — This would probably be a good place to pop into if you were on Portabella looking at the shops — however because of the market I imagine it is quiet busy on Saturdays. — It is beautifully decorated! The ambiance is great! Lowlights: — I was treated very rudely by a young lady at the bar. — The food was below average. If something is going to be fried, I feel like you should be told so on menu! Overall: I think this is a great place to meet up with friends! But don’t expect to be wow-ed.

Just so you know, at night, the outside of this bar looks yellow/green. So, if you are looking for a blue place, you’ll be misled. So, it’s just like any other bar. It’s larger than most, so good for groups. I don’t see what is so special about it, though. Like, Hugo B. says he’s been going there since 1974. Why? Is there some secret attraction or unique thing that I’m not aware of? No, seriously, what’s the hype about? Anyway, the waitress was really nice. Maybe she was a little too nice. She was checking on us every 5 minutes, asking if we wanted more drinks, even though everyone’s glasses were still half full. It made me feel like she wanted us to hurry up or something. She was kind of pretty though, so I’m not going to count her visits against her. Ok, I just noticed the picture that points to the«Secret Garden.» Now I’m a little curious. I didn’t go there when I visited, but yeah. Is that where the magic happens, Hugo? Also, does the B. stand for Boss?
