Awful. Gave this place a 2nd chance after 4yrs away and it was still the same. My pint of Cobra tasted like cider it had sediment floating in the bottom. One of the chutneys had a horrible woody pulp in that almost broke a tooth. The best part of the meal was an onion salad that reminded me of a dog I had as a child that used to pass wind in its sleep.(Because it tasted like old cabbage.) The food was as tasteless as a Cold War stew. «Spicy?» And there were only 4 pieces of meat in my main. That’s why it’s cheap! There are no table cloths, so lazy. Basically I’ll never be going back. Ever. Avoid.

I’d recommend this place to a friend, Taj Mahal is cosy, peaceful, clean, decorated like the inside of a luxury train, the staff are polite and attentive and its good value for money(£35-£40 for 2 mains, 2 sides, 1 dessert and a bottle of wine). You don’t feel rushed, the food arrives in good time, and there’s no skimping on portions and generous amounts of meat in the currys. My wife and I always have a good time here. I’m no wine expert but my simple pallete has always enjoyed any of the £10ish bottles(very good price for a restaurant in Putney) of wine they do. Last time we were here we had a bottle of Muscadet, and the kitchen was accommodating for a special request for one of the dishes we had. Everything tasted great, we had the Chicken Tikka Masala, another Chicken curry that comes with salad(out of the ordinary but good) I can’t remember the name of, and cheesy peas+potatoes without the potatoes. For dessert it was this ice cream in a Winnie The Pooh style honey pot. Unsurprisingly that was good too. I’ve been to most of the Indian restaurants in Putney and I like them all but this is my favourite(Samratt comes a close 2nd).

At first I was quite hesitant to try this restaurant – it looks a bit cheesy from the outside. But, the food is amazing, especially for the price. I have never managed to spend more than $ 17 per person including drinks. Everything we have tried so far has been delicious. There is one SUPER spicy lamb dish that is brutal yet addictive. Plus it’s family owned which always makes you feel better about supporting an establishment!
