First off, this review must be taken in the context of a review for city drinks. I didn’t eat at the place, but the food looks amazing. This was an upscale but neighborhood feeling bar with a lively but not to crowded atmosphere on Thursday night(probably more crowded at the end of dry Jan). Great selection of beer on tap, wine(pricy) and good gin behind the bar. Their jugged hair ale was tasty as well as the ipa on tap. Also had an expertly made gin and tonic with ginger instead of lime made with opirh gin. My one complaint is that they automatically poured double which made the drink pricy. Would have loved to try the wild boar scotch egg but the kitchen was closed. Also had olives behind the bar. The eating menu looked game centric but also expensive. Would come back to eat. What’s best is that this place is on my walk home from the city. For good drinks and nibbles, this is a gem.

Came here with friends on a recommendation and overall had a lovely time. Food seemed great overall. We were there on Sunday so people mainly had a variety of roasts. I had a mallard, which was a special, and while it’s pricey at £28, you do literally get a whole bird. I was a bit disappointed with the game chips, which turned out to basically be salted crisps — I was imagining something a bit heartier. But the meat was pink and delicious. My friends were also very enthusiastic about their mutton, chicken and sausages and mash, and the various roast accompaniments(carrots, cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, etc). The pecan and treacle tart was a tad disappointing because I’d envisaged something more like a pecan pie, but it was nice enough. Friends enjoyed all their desserts, which I think were sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble. Overall what confirmed it as a 4* spot to eat was how everybody was discussing what they would have next time, which is a good sign! The vibe inside is great and it does feel more high end than just a gastropub, which is fortunate considering the higher prices. Service started off great, with the right amount of attention, and we always had full water glasses. However, there were some long gaps(waiting to get dessert menus, waiting for the bill), which weren’t a problem on a lazy Sunday afternoon but would have been irritating in different circumstances. We also had a waiter who didn’t know what lime and soda was and brought us lemonade, which was a little odd in a pub, but a more senior guy remedied the situation quickly and pleasantly.

I was expecting a lot from their Sunday roast. Food was okay, not amazing. Service was kind of lacking. But overall worth a try since the space is pretty cool

The food and wine were stunning, it is a very popular place so book early! One thing that made me not wanting to come back there again is beheaded hare downstairs exhibited with other slaughtered animals. I thought this was ott, eating them is bad enough… Sorry

One of the best Gastropubs i have been too, There Sunday Roast Dinners are the best i have had! Yes at the pricey side at around £18 a head but very good. Wine is superb and they have a vast array to choose from, the whole restaurant looked awesome, we finished with a beer by the bar in this electric London City Pub, It is also very close to the Barbican.

Who knew there was a restaurant stuck over on the side here. The pictures and menu look great. I want to eat here on my next trip. I was hauled in by customers after a day of meetings. The atmosphere excellent. You could drop the bartenders into any American hipster bar and they would look like they belonged. It’s too bad things like that get globalized. Anyway the beer selection excellent, The selection of whisky and whiskey was top notch. I didn’t try a cocktail, but they looked like they were prepared with fresh ingredients and with skill.

Go for the cocktails, stay for the food. Loved the mutton Sunday roast with mint jelly.

Probably one of the best Sunday roasts in London. A true gamer’s paradise, this gastropub is decorated as traditional brasserie-meets hunter’s trophy room. Taxidermy sidles up next to brass finishings and elegant dining areas. I love the expansive paintings depicting the thrill of the hunt — complete with hounds, hares, horses, fanfare and jodhpur-clad round-bellied men. If you’re up for dining in this environment, it’s only the icing on the cake. The food is WONDERFUL. Duck fat chips, Yorkshire puddings, roast mutton, quail, hare, roast beef, wild boar — any and every cut of meat, dripping in fat, oven-roasted for hours. We had the Sunday rump roast and liver terrine. The wine selection by the glass was perfectly complementary and the place wasn’t too crowded. In all, an excellent selection of fine fare, good drinks and English ambiance.

I expected this gastro pub to be overcrowded and pricey. From walking in the door to exiting I was impressed. No crowds, good food and easy too talk with friend. I bought a round first which included a glass of wine. The pour was one of the most generous I have seen worldwide with him finishing off the rest of the bottle. As we had our drinks we perused the restaurant menu which screamed UK countryside to me with rabbit, pigeon and pork as just some of the delicious options. My partner and I shared the leg of a suckling pig they had. All I can say is it was top notch! The only thing that annoyed me about this place and why it didn’t get 5 stars was the assumed 12% service charge.

A Great place to eat and very central from Moorgate and Barbican(located nearer to the Barbican Centre) lively atmosphere, very welcoming staff, this place is full of photos on the wall of animals and stuffed animals in display cases especially Hares!(see my pictures) food was to die for, I had the Rump Steak, with King Scallops for starters and Apricot crumble with Honey Ice Cream for dessert, so if you are in the area and need a place to eat then this is the place! I’m definitely going back again and very reasonably priced for central London.

If you want a great pub meal in nice and perhaps a bit unusual surroundings(there is stuffed birds, deer and hares around the pub and down the stairs and in the restaurant paintings of hares etc) then I totally recommend this pub. All the staff that work there are very friendly and cheerful. I sat along the back of the wall so I was able to see the kitchen /pass from where I was sat, loved it. I enjoyed watching the head chef at the pass especially. The restaurant serves various food from your traditional homemade pie to Lobster. For starters me and my husband both had scallops with black pudding, for mains I had cod on a herb risotto, my husband steak with chunky chips(I don’t like chips but my The Jugged Hares was amazing and so crispy and hot) and for dessert I had Lemon tart and my husband apricot and apple crumble. Portions was a good size, everything was steaming hot and all the food tasted lovely. I would go back and eat there if I am in the area. The toilet area is downstairs and I must admit I was surprised by its niceness and how clean the bathroom area was, very well kept. Love the waterfall taps and the towels that are piled up on the table. Only one piece of advice I feel is that for pub food the meals are a bit on the expensive side and this is why I only give my review 4 stars but that is not a criticism as I would go back.

Really quintessential brasserie with very nice natural lighting. The starters were delicious and well-portioned. So much so that after ordering four between the three of us, we were quite satisfied without mains. Delicious terrine, fantastic crab meat salad, the wild bore pie was delightful. I wish we’d had room for mains! Protip 1 — don’t ask the staff for recommendations. Their finger will go right to the most expensive option available. Protip 2 — They sell these rare black gull eggs for £7.50 each. Avoid. It’s a raw egg, with salt, pepper and mayonnaise on the side. Tastes like any other egg, though apparently only five families in the world can harvest them. But stories and rarity don’t impart flavor!

I can think of nothing better than spending a Sunday afternoon with a group of friends, and a variety of meats! In which case the Jugged Hare was perfect. As you enter the pub the main wall behind the bar is a glass case of taxidermy. To the right mounted antelope and rabbit heads. The main restaurant wall decorated with prints of animals. This bodes well for the meaty game theme. I’d read good things about the Sunday roast, so was keen to give this a go. Between 6 of us we had the 45 day aged rump roasts, bacon croquettes, boar bombs, rabbits liver on toast, scallops, and a rump steak. The liver and scallops were from the specials menu. Each dish was a well prepared, good sized portion. I get really excited when a restaurant serves cauliflower cheese with their Sunday roasts, and the Jugged Hare serves up a delicious side with theirs. Service was really friendly and accommodating. The waitress arranged for a kids portion of fish and chips for the one child we had in the group. It turned out to be a lovely grilled piece of cod, triple cooked chips, and a side of veg. On the way out we were shown the ageing cabinet where meat is hung, which was gross and pretty great all at the same time. All in all a pretty great afternoon of eating. We will definitely be back for more!

Celebrating my first English meal in London at The Jugged Hare felt right. The gastropub is clean with ample wooden décor(also taxidermy everywhere!). Our party sat at one of the barrels and enjoyed the sunlight coming in through the atrium. Great ambiance to spend Sunday afternoon catching up with friends. Beers on tap are cask ale, bitburger, heineken, etc. I’ve never tried/heard of cask ale before, but my party introduced it as uncarbonated, warm beer. Sounds interesting enough to try it one of these days. My Sunday Roast with beef was really a feast. Although you can get it with chicken or lamb, the beef is aged for 45 days. The horseradish was on the creamier side without enough kick so that I felt the beef to be overwhelmed. However, the steamed vegetables were seasoned well and contrasted well to the cauliflower cheese gratin.

Lovely gastro pub and restaurant. Had the Sunday roast chicken and it was delicious. Great flavour and came with all the trimmings. Staff were friendly and service was quick despite the restaurant being busy. Had the sticky toffee pudding for desert and it was divine! Would recommend!

Great hotel and good onsite pub/restaurant. Have tried the pub more than once and it doesn’t disappoint. Only hesitation is the price, but service is excellent!

If you are the mood for authentic English, including properly sourced wild game, you would struggle to do better. The service and atmosphere are very good and the food is extremely well considered. They clearly think about what they are doing and have a distinct philosophy of food. Handy after an evening at the Barbican Centre as well!

We needed a place to eat near the Barbican, and this gastropub was luckily right around the corner. Since we came around 6 on a Friday night, we were immediately seated. If you’re a PETA advocate, you probably want to give Jugged Hare a miss since taxidermy is the prime source of décor. We ordered the steak with truffle mash and cauliflower purée(not sure the price because we subbed in a different cut of steak since the one listed was sold out) and the roast chicken(£17.50). The steak was cooked a bit too rare, but the sauce and mash were great accompaniments. Chicken was a a little dry but still nice with crispy skin. Peach crumble(£6) contained huge chunks of peach, and went well with the contrast of ginger ice cream.

The name of this place sounds like a pub, and when you walk in, the front part feels like a pub. Except there’s a nice restaurant hidden in the back, and they serve a lot of interesting British fare. The menu points out which foods are in season, and there are plenty of seasonal offerings. They specialize in game, but if you’re not that adventurous, they do have some normal items. We started with some queen scallops with chorizo and garlic. Hmmmmm so delicious and creamy. We also had a salad, but in the face of all these yummy game meats, I could barely remember what it was. I had the roe deer and port sausage with mashed potatoes, which was a game version of bangers and mash, essentially. The mash and the roast onion was very, very savory, and you could definitely taste a hint of herb in there. The roe deer sausage was interesting but a bit grainy, so it wasn’t as good as I had hoped. On the other hand, you could tell it was a freshly made sausage. I really wish I had tried the jugged hare since I never had that dish. I read about it online and got cold feet…(poor rabbit). If you’re a traveller craving for British pub food with a flair, this is a good place to go!
