I’m doing well on Stokey cafes considering I live at the other end of town … The Kauri Tree Café is my favourite so far as I work my way up and down Church Street. It’s relatively small and feels more like a place to rest than to work. I should probably have ordered something more imaginative than a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel. Not the Brick Lane variety but rather the larger mass-manufactured type, but still tasty. Washed down with a bottle of old-fashioned lemonade. The coffee was good, too. And next time I may have some cake.

Kiwi pastry chef Alex Ross ex Granita and the Spence has now gone solo with The Kauri Tree, a fantastic new café where everything is made by him in his new kitchen on the premises. He is clearly using quality ingredients as there is nowhere better to have a home made croissant and coffee for breakfast. His sandwiches are inspired as are his cakes — the ambience all makes for a cool experience.
