Revising for exams in the library is a tricky business. Not least because it means you get more receptive to just going out and buying lunch because it’s quick, easy and means you can get back to the books sooner. Unfortunately it’s also bad for the bank balance, and The Whole Hog, whilst tasty grub, doesn’t do an awful lot for the wallet! I took a lunch break and headed over to get a bite to eat. They didn’t take card which meant a trip into Charing Cross Hospital for the nearest ATM. I could have just gone elsewhere after getting money, but I’d been here before in the distant past and remembered it was vaguely alright so thought I should try again and then review it post-gorging. I fancied a sandwich, and for some reason chicken and chorizo salad sandwich sounded like a good option. They don’t have a full menu here; it’s more like a ‘each item costs this’ board which means having to try to work it out. My head was hurting from trying to work things out anyway so I didn’t bother and just ordered. I was disappointed when I asked for white bread to find that they didn’t make their own, or use fresh bread, instead opting for the pre-sliced plastic wrapped variety. The bread was tiny and very thinly sliced anyway so I asked for a bap instead. The lady loaded lots of filling onto it and put it on a plate, in a brown paper bag to take away. On the way over to the counter to pay, I grabbed some crisps and perused the cake selection, asking for a chocolate chip cookie. The lady totted it up, coming to £6.30 which was a bit steep for a cookie, crisps and roll(the cookie was only £1 and the crisps can’t have been that much meaning almost a fiver for a sandwich) but I paid it anyway, only for her to wander away and forget the cookie! I got it in the end and headed away to eat. The roll was nice, chicken very moist and chorizo tasty, though lots of fat in it. The cookie was very crumbly though which made it hard to eat, and unfortunately I much prefer chewy cookies so I was a bit sad. I’m still not convinced I was charged the right price for it all but I guess that was partly my fault for not bothering to work it out! Ah well, bit too pricey for me for the future I think, plus there are lots of other cafés around for me to try instead!
