If you really know great sushi, this isn’t it. I agree with fellow helpers that it’s 1. Mediocre and 2. A let down based on the other«rather promising reviews» We did however feel safe eating the raw fish here, but agree that they skimp on the fish servings. Service was wonderful, but we were the only people in the place for most of our meal. Not sure how sushi is in London in general, but my guess is not very good??? If you’re craving Asian flair in this part of town, we loved the PHO Café just down the road on Battersea Rise.

Tokiya is probably the most traditional Japanese restaurant I’ve been to in London so far. A lot of items on the menu and food/drink presentation are conventional. We went around 7pm on a Saturday evening but there was no one else. It was interesting that they still asked if we had a reservation and took time to decide which table we should take. Nevertheless, the food quality was very good and we loved everything we had! Chirashi sushi included some fresh seafood of the day like scallop and salmon. We were pretty happy with juicy looking raw fish. Dobin-mushi was served in a classic tea pot. This clear warm soup with seafood and veggie was refreshing with squeezed lemon juice. Nabeyaki Udon was a must-have noodle soup on a cold night, served in a large clay pot. Octopus karaage had a bit of spicy flavor. The crispy and chewy texture went great with this juicy appetizer. For dessert, we had a scoop of chestnut and black sesame ice cream each. The black sesame was very flavorful but the chestnut had a strong taste of vanilla and I couldn’t detect the nutty scent. We enjoyed all the food here. The reason for missing one star is that everything(even non-fish dishes) was a bit overpriced for the portion they serve.

I wish my local sushi stop was a bit more adventurous but then again I have to remember where we are. London tends to be pretty simple and not as flashy as what i’m accustomed to so that is also factored in my rating. I had the Unagi(sea eel) which they spelled Unakyu which I thought was a bit weird but tasted fine. The roll itself was TEEENNNNyyy tiny. like child bite size. Ok, i thought, i see how this place ‘rolls’. get it. get it. how it rolls. ok, bad pun. Also had the special which was a spicy scallop which was also tiny in size but packed much heat. It was very simple, just the spicy sauce and scallop for £6. The rice felt and tasted a day old to top it off. Followed by a massive Spider roll. I don’t know when the softshell crab was fried but it certainly wasn’t after I had arrived and ordered it or else it would’ve been warmer than room temp or a bit cooler. So that threw me off a bit. I hate having to question my sushi place, its just too stressful. The service was great, had to order extra ginger at £1 which I thought was fine since I do eat a lot of it. Overall… if you’re really craving sushi, go, but order whatever is on special. The quality of fish was really nice it was all the other stuff and methods that brought it down a bunch.

We’ve eaten in and on another occasion attempted to order delivery. When we attempted to order delivery they chose to ignore on a few occasions the mobile phone they specifically requested deliveries are made through. When I eventually got through I was asked whether I had had delivery from them before. As I hadn’t ordered delivery before I was told I couldn’t order as they were too busy(bear in mind they only have 10 covers or so in the restaurant!). They also charge £3 for delivery and orders need to be over £20. There’s no discount on the restaurant prices which are at the top end for the size of the portion. We wont be attempting to order delivery again. On the occasion where we did eat in the restaurant, the sushi was freshly prepared and of good quality but stingy portions given the price. They provide a small amount of pickled ginger and charge £1 for additional! I wouldn’t mind paying for extra if they would give you enough to accompany each piece of sushi in the first place. The Nishi Dengaku(grilled aubergine in miso) was the best dish, but at over £8 for half an aubergine it was very overpriced. The vegetable tempura was AWFUL. It was battered vegetables, not tempura batter! During the meal the waitress(non-Japanese) was shouted at by the Japanese chef/owner for making a mistake with the orders. It was very awkward to listen to! Instead of telling her off, why don’t you apologise to the customers who are now having to wait twice as long for their grilled aubergine(which thankfully were worth the wait) There are posters on the wall telling you that on Fri/sat each person has to order over £15 exec drinks, along with the charge for ginger, delivery etc there are too many rules! It suggests they are struggling to make ends meet but their attitude towards customers contradicts that entirely! Based on this I wont be making an effort to eat here again soon!

We decided to stay in and order sushi, but probably should have just gone out. The women on the phone(I actually had to speak to two of them just to put in the order) kept saying my card wouldn’t run because they didn’t understand my address. Wen the sushi finally got to us over an hour later, it lacked any real flavor or substance. After I got a call from my bank the next day because the restaurant charged my card FIVE times, the same two women at the restaurant refused to admit that they’d done anything wrong and said that they only charged me once. After three days and a lot of back-and-forth, I finally just got my bank to dispute the charges for me, and after almost a week I got my money back.

Don’t you hate when you get your hopes all up and then you’re kind of let down. Well, after reading three rather promising reviews on this sushi place, my Swiss friend and I decided to give this place a try… alas I have to say that my dinner experience was just average: neither did it really suck but it definitely didn’t blow my mind either. For appetizers we ordered the classic dishes: edamame and vegetable tempura. And usually you can’t really go wrong with these, but somehow I didn’t enjoy either of them: the edamame portion was rather miniscule(for £3) and the tempura was not crispy but soggy… not good! We then had several sushi rolls, which were definitely better than what we had before and kind of made up for the rather disappointing start. Yet, what I found really annoying is that there was only a tiny bit of wasabi and a small heap of pickled ginger… and…if you would want more ginger you’d actually have to purchase it at the additional expense of £1!!! That’s just not right… ginger is like the Japanese version of ketchup and should come free, or not? Service was also disappointly un-Japanese: the waitress was rather cold and not as welcoming as I am used to from other Japanese places. My verdict: if I would live in this neighbourhood I might come back and give it another try, but given the fact that I live on the oppsite side of the city.,

Okay, so I’ve been known to build up hype, but with Tokiya I feel I’m justified. This is a brilliant sushi place — it certainly could hold its own when I compare it to places I’ve loved in California(the closest I’ve come to Japan…) — so for that reason, it gets five stars from me. The place is small — only 10 or 11 tables — and the menu is humble. But with a blackboard that lists the fresh fish of the day and a few specials, you know Tokiya offers quality over quantity. Their salmon skin roll was the best I’ve ever had. Ever. And based on the aforementioned fresh fish blackboard, I had a piece of yellowtail sashimi which was heaven. The wine list, again pretty small, is impressive. Decent prices all around. And a very smiley server(although one waitress for the whole place on a Saturday night means you may have to wait a little while for your food/drinks/bill). I’d gladly come back to Tokiya for sushi again — bonus that it’s in Clapham, as that’s not too far from home!

Mediocrity. It’s not as bad as it seems when it comes to sushi in London. Just had Tokiya Sushi and have to say: why are resturants so cheap with their fish when making maki here? All I’m asking for is equal parts fish/veggie to rice, not even more fish than rice like I’d find in the US but this seems like a difficult enough ask. On the upside, their sushi is yum yum yummie, and pretty cheap, affordable by all who have about 10 – 15 quid to spend on a dinner, but maki, although good, has such a small amount of the fish you order in it, it doesn’t even make sense to order them over the sushi unless you really don’t like fish. Not so good point #2 My dinner-mate got a sushi regular which was 6 pieces of sushi and 5 pieces of maki. What they didn’t state was that«maki» means the cheapest thing possible which turned out to be a cucumber roll with not even a bit of fish in the roll in sight. Obviously if people are ordering a sushi plate, they aren’t vegetarians and generally will expect SOME fish in their maki! End diagnosis, would order take away from(i forgot to mention there is a 10 pound per person rule even though most of their entrees are under 10 pounds and oh yeah it DOESN’T include drinks) especially the sushi, but don’t go by the photo here, you are lucky if the maki comes with half that much filling, albeit they are still tasty if unsatisfactory. sushi pretty good, maki order take away from Tsunami just down the other way.

Tokiya Sushi is a gorgeous little Japanese restaurant on Battersea Rise. It sits quietly amongst the hustle and bustle of the aforementioned street and Northcote road. Upon entering the bar, it’s serene and unassuming elegance, yet humble feel add to the appeal. It seems to be run by a Japanese couple who are friendly and accommodating. This place is definitely one of the best sushi restaurants I’ve been to in London. The Nigiri is fresh and light, the sushi rice crumbles in your mouth and the fish is delectable. Try the scallop Nigiri if you want to taste something new — it’s gorgeous! The added bonus here is that you can get a take away and bring that fresh authentic taste straight home with you. This is the perfect place for a quiet romantic dinner or a one on one with a friend. The sushi is faultless and the location is great.

A busy day in the office so thought i deserved a treat from my favourite local Japanese restaurant Tokiya is a tiny traditionally-styled sushi bar, with only 24 covers. Little known beyond the residents of NappyValley but always full and busy with their take out service. I had my usual selection of fatty tuna and salmon sashimi with tuna and spring onion inside out rolls and miso soup. i also tried their Bamboo Sake — literally served from a hollowed out Bamboo stem into tiny bamboo cups. Really delicious and much better than the very standard wine list. They also serve Sapporo — the best Japanese beer around. Very reasonably priced — especially for good sushi — at £25 a head inc tip.
