I love the way The Union describe their members as arts and media seniors. Probably true and also the reason for no review here even thought they’ve been around forever. Old school media types don’t write reviews … The Union must have been one of the first private members clubs I was ever invited to. I was a Soho meedja dahling way back when private members clubs were quite rare and I recall one debauched birthday dinner here in particular. So good to find everything still just as I remembered it. Especially poignant as Soho is changing at a shocking rate at the moment with most independent bars and restaurants taken over by generic chains. A gig in aid of a campaign to save small music venues in Soho was a perfect reminder of what makes this area in general, and the Union in particular, so special. G&T served in massive glasses, a great bunch of punters of all ages, excellent music and amazing compere in genuinely retro setting. So much art on the walls, you spot a different portrait every time you look up. I had at least one too many and was very merry stumbling home through the dark alleys of Soho. Just like the old days … But this is not just a drinking den, they actually serve rather nice food — and it’s all organic. All set in a beautiful old townhouse — what’s not to love.
