Upstage @ Cafe 1001

The big open space in the back of Café 1001 has been taken over one Wednesday a month by a performing arts movement called Upstage. Upstage is a company that allows up-​and-​coming performing artists of all genres to perform for a small fee, in front of an eager East London audience.
I was there last Wednesday and got to enjoy seven acts of varying length and quality. In the darkened vampiric surroundings, complete with, stage, bar and DJ, I felt very comfortable and relaxed. The whole night felt very intimate, in a relaxed way that gave me a joyous feeling of being part of a true urban, underground London.
There is no entrance fee to see the performances, and that makes this on-​going event all the sweeter. There aren’t many places you get to watch performing arts for free in London. Upstage is well worth checking out, either as a budding performer or interested observer.
