Supermaket royalty! John Lewis’s grocery store. It’s like you are shopping in Harrods foodhall but at a fraction of the price. I think they try and be reasonably competitive with day to day things but they do not try and compete with the bigs boys –you are not bulk buying here but you do not come for that. You are coming for the fantastic range of deli items both on the shelves in the brilliant food depatrments –bakery meat ans fish etc

A bright, well laid-out, decent-sized version of the upmarket supermarket chain. Even though it isn’t my regular branch, it’s easy to find my way around here and often pleasurably calm to visit, in comparison with more hectic high street branches. The fresh counters are particularly well-stocked, as is the ‘healthy’ product section. There’s also a decent choice of gift related items and magazines. What impressed me most, when I last came here with an older friend, was the genuinely helpful attitude and pleasantly chatty friendliness of the staff. As in many of their other stores, they have the brilliant Community Matters charity scheme area, with three transparent ‘bins’, where you make your choice before placing the(free) token you receive — after paying for your shopping. Then, at the end of the month, £1000 is divided and donated accordingly, between three(monthly-changing) local good causes. A great way to still be able to donate to charity in credit crunch times.
