Yum D is a small place in Brixton market. It has the feel of a two bit operation, almost like sitting in someone kitchen but that shouldn’t put you off as the food is really good. It is a BYOB place so if you want an alcoholic drink bring it with you. The menu seemed to have a lot of specials so I imagine that it changes fairly often, I ordered the chicken massaman curry which came with rice. Julia D and her friend had the vegetable pad thai that drew no complaints. The whole bill for three of us came to £26. Worth checking out if you are in the Brixton area.

My new favourite spot in Brixton. There I was poor little me, hungry as hell and BOOM, Yum D appeared. I had read some good reviews but I had to try it for myself. After ordering the fried tofu with sweet chilli sauce and the veggie yellow curry, I was sold. The food was amazing, even the fried tofu wasnt oily, the rice with the perfect texture and the curry spicy enough. Veggies were not overcooked and the tofu was perfect. Super reasonable prices, friendly and quick service and did I mention how cute and cosy the place is? I don’t think I have left such a big tip in a while. I already miss their curry. Damn.

I’m usually keen on trying new thing all the time but at Yum-D I will always have the Laksa Noodle Soup with tofu and veggies because it’s just too delicious. People I took there agree and couldn’t get enough of it either. The bowl is reasonably priced and also so huge that I can take half of it home and enjoy it again the next day. The interior is not fancy at all but very casual and homely, with plastic tablecloths. This adds to the authentic and intimate feel of the hot little room that smells strongly of spices and fish sauce(to a bearable extent).

Yum D feels like you are in someone’s home. The décor is playful and kitsch-y and it is definitely a family run business and a cheap Brixton market option. However, the food could really be upped a notch. I ordered the pad see ew with tofu and veg. This was super basic and reminded me of something I’d make for myself at home. There was none of the lovely strands of creamy egg running throughout that you normally find in the dish and it was tasted overwhelming of dark soy sauce. It also came with an odd side of green salad, straight out of a salad bag. The dish wasn’t horrible but it fits perfectly with a two star rating — ‘meh, I’ve experienced better.’ My partner had the laksa noodle soup. Again, nothing amazing and I’ve actually tasted better made at home. So although I really wanted to like Yum D, it didn’t live up to all the other reviews.

I work right next to Yum-D so they brought my meal right in to me. Awesome! I had the thai green curry with tofu and coconut rice. SO good. I think it ties with Wok Wok in Clapham Junction(which was a little spicier) as my favourite TGC. Will definitely return and try more of their vegan dishes.

«Please don’t review this, it’s too busy already» implored my friend, but it was SOGOOD. And Cheap(ish). There was an hour wait to sit inside, so we wandered off for«starter dumplings» and Mama Lan. By the time we finished those, our table was ready and we wandered over for the main event: We both had roast duck curry(as it is something you don’t share) which was deliciously homemade with a great selection of fresh veg(squash, carrots, courgettes, grapes– very«this is what we bought in the market today»). I had coconut rice with mine, which was absolutely divine-not too hot, very morish and filling. They also have(as other people have said already) amazing looking veggie tempuras, but you know, that would just be greedy. Brixton Village/Market being Brixton Village, the restaurant was BYO and the wine guy was more than happy to match us up with a suitable Spanish plonk that costs the same as you would buy in Tesco but infinitely better. So, shuuush, keep the secret.

Brilliant! I love to be within walking distance of a good Thai restaurant and so far Yum D is the best I’ve tried in Brixton. I believe I’ve found my local… The menu contains many of the old reliables but done well and with extra fresh and tasty ingredients. I was in a noodly soup sort of mood and there are a few to choose from. I went for the beef and coconut milk soup in the end which I loved and very much look forward to exploring the menu further! Both the colourful ingredients and décor bring freshness and vibrance to mind. The staff are polite, friendly and helpful. I’m definitely going to enjoy returning time and again to work my way through the regular menu and the many specials and so should you! c*

Yum D is advertised as «Thai street food». I’m not so sure about that — more the unusual standards — but whatever you call it, it’s good. There’s a selection of specials, all around the £6 range including rice. There are some fair standards and some lovely soups, and everything fairly well punches you in the face with freshness. Each and every meal I’ve had here has been just that bit better than at Kaosarn down the row… but I’m glad that the hiperati queue up at Kaosarn ‘cos the food and the friendlies are what’s going on at this end of the row.

I love Yum-D. I’m so happy to see them nearly constantly busy. I eat here about once a month. First of all, ignore that little map to the side. They are in Brixton Market(not Village) off of Coldharbour Lane. Seriously, a 3 minute walk from the tube. Eating here has always been a fantastic experience. It is like eating in Nok’s(the owner) front room. All of the ingredients are freshly prepped, making the counter a rainbow of colours and shapes. This is also good if you cannot eat certain foods, as everything is separate and cooked fresh to order. She can also make any dish vegetarian or vegan by leaving out the fish sauce/egg and adding tofu & more veg, just let them know! The craziest starter is the tempura. It is just a whole lump of veggies deep fried into a ball that you have to pull apart. YUM! My top picks would be the Pad Thai and Green Curry, with the new Drunken Noodles on the special menu nearly tying for second place. The Coconut Pad Thai special almost made the list, but it wasn’t coconuty enough for me. Oh, did I mention the main portions are around £7? Bargain! I tell them not to go easy on the spices & chillies for me, and most of the time they let me have my spicy challenge. Why do I want to sniff and cough while I eat delicious food? I don’t know… Somehow it makes the dish better for me. They have loose green tea and Thai iced tea for special drinks, but it’s BYOB beyond that. There is also pre-packed Thai foods for purchase inside, and a whole range of knick-knacks like bobble sea creature magnets to Thai rice steamers. Nok sometimes also sells bags and shirts she has made. Such a fun place!

This incredible little restaurant caught my eye with all the fabulous fresh ingredients on show through the window. Taking a seat indoors, I was warmly greeted and given a table in a wonderfully unpretentious room, which felt like being in someone’s home in terms of the food and cooking that was being done as I sat and enjoyed the atmosphere. Waiting for my thai green curry dish I watched as group after group of people who seemed to know it well came to enquire for tables, some had to wait as it was incredibly popular, some went away for a drink and then came back later to be welcomed to a table. The food was delicious, freshly cooked and the flavours were just magical. An authentic and wonderful restaurant, with a friendly and gentle atmosphere, where the smells of the cooking engulf you gently and work your taste buds into a mini frenzy ready for a meal that did NOT disappoint! Price wise this was reasonable especially considering the quality of the ingredients and great cooks! I recommend this lovely little restaurant even though I’m tempted to keep it all to myself it’s too good a place not to recommend!
