I still have Carhartt products I bought 26 years ago. Fashion is fleeting but quality endures. Workwear that lasts and transcends trends.

It’s a sexist store. The retail assistant kindly pointed me to the small corner where a few shirts and some jeans lay for the girls. Lucky I wasn’t desperate to purchase anything then. I remember when Carharrt first launched, they opened their doors to the public offering free cider, with some guys on the decks and a showcase of art. It’s a really cool open space for a really cool shop of really cool looking clothes. I’m not sure what the label is about but it’s expensive anyway. £70 for a pair of jeans I worked out, but there’s student discount. There’s nice things to look at though like the flashy motorbike in the front window and the art array around the shop. I can’t comment too much on the clothing range as clearly it’s a man’s world in here.

I was surprised to find myself actually quite liking Carhartt. Usually I don’t like shops that are too label-ish, but the clothes in here are actually pretty cool and aren’t plastered with the name of the label wherever you look. The shop is cool, spacious and laid back. There’s even a comfy sofa where you can sit and chill out whilst your friends try on the clothes. I found it quite difficult to find the prices on any labels on the clothes. I’m guessing this is because if you can afford to shop in Carhartt, you’re going to decide that you want something and it won’t really matter how much it costs. One day I will be able to afford to shop here and when I can I shall enjoy the fact that the prices aren’t on the labels.

This is corporate cool, carhart cater to the skater anything on a board of an indie nature. But because there such a big brand at the same time it’s a tad of a rip off. With all varieties of designer ware inside I sometimes wonder how shops like this survive, there’s not a lot of people in there well ever(especially when I’m in the place seems desolate) and they have to replace there whole rang every new season. O well carhart still seems to go strong. They’ve got friendly staff and a few changing rooms ooo and a scooter in the front window, the one I’ve always wanted they were made by Honda and only out in Japan for a limited time.

Hats off to Detroit. Whenever people rave about the great American cities, it’s usually New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago. In my mind however, Detroit has been responsible for some of the wonders of the last century: We’re talking Motown We’re talking Detroit Techno We’re talking beautiful motor cars built by Ford, Dodge and Chrysler. We’re talking MC5 kicking out the jams. We’re talking The White Stripes playing incredible rock and roll. And we’re talking cool threads from Carhartt. Formed in 1889, Carhartt started as a company providing hard-wearing jeans, dungarees, shirts and fleeces for workers. Now a global street wear label too, they have dozens of cool flagship stores selling more fashionable jeans, tees, hoodies, lumberjack shirts and accessories to students, snowboarders and thirty-somethings. This particular store also has occasional exhibitions and events with deejays and live bands. Way to go Detroit!
