Good night out, feel super comfortable here(which is hard for me being a relatively new gay) good music, cheapish drinks and to top it all off FIT barmaid! So when your too shy to dance etc(like myself) just enjoy the view

I do my very best to avoid Coyotes, however due to the unfortunate preferences of some of my acquaintances it isn’t always possible. Sigh. I begrudgingly give it two stars, because it’s not ALL bad after all. Let me explain. When one bats for the ‘other team’ so to speak, especially if said person is female, it can be extraordinarily difficult to meet other people on the same team. Are you with me? And there are very few bars which cater directly towards this group of women, and in this respect, Manchester is very lucky to have Coyotes: a place where women can meet other women, and interact in an environment where they feel safe from judgement and leering eyes, in other words, somewhere they can be completely themselves. Or so this is the theory. According to the Facebook page: «no matter your creed, colour or sexuality you are always welcome» — well that may indeed be the case, deep, deep down, but it definitely isn’t the impression given off on a more superficial level… Every time I walk into Coyotes I feel like I’m being judged, and that’s probably because I am. No, this is not just me being paranoid, many of my female friends have said exactly the same thing. Pairs of eyes will look you up and down and make a decision about you there and then, and in my case, it’s rarely a favourable one, and this initial assessment will swiftly be followed by sneers, or what would have been referred to at school as ‘evil eyes’, you know«she’s giving me the evils, she is» — that sort of thing. However, the alternative to this isn’t that favourable either. You know in cartoons, when an animal is hungry, and you can see beef-burgers in their eyes? Well… that’s the alternative. Piece of meat. I fail this initial assessment, I am certain, because I do not look or act the part. When I go out I like to do my hair, wear lipstick, whack on some heels and a dress… in short I like to make myself feel all girly and feminine. This kind of appearance triggers silent alarm bells all around me in Coyotes and I certainly do not feel welcome. I do not judge how everyone else dresses and wears their hair, in fact I embrace the diversity, but it seems to be too much to ask for the same in return. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the music is also pretty awful, it varies from dire r ‘n’ b to drawn out dance classics, there’s absolutely no character to it at all. I’ll normally dance to anything, willingly and happily, but I do feel as though I need a few drinks down me before I can bear it at Coyotes. Their advertising is terrible too. For one thing, they can’t seem to get their facts straight, there’s an upcoming night called«Back to the Future» with the flyer designed in the style of the popular sci-fi film. The night promises classic dance anthems from the 90s onwards, which really doesn’t make any sense for a theme that’s based upon one of the most famous films of the EIGHTIES. Maybe I’m just being picky. However there is more. Their taglines range from«come taste our treats» to «what happens at Coyotes… stays at Coyotes» — it just sounds seedy. Oh and don’t expect to be able to hear anything anyone says after about 8pm. If you want to be able to communicate in here: learn sign language. In summary, it CAN be thought of as a safe haven, but you will definitely fit in more if you’re more like Shane than Helena(you know, The L Word).

Fantastic bar in the gay village, this place has a predominantly female clientele, although I’ve seen a few guys in there too. Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, much more inclusive than Vanilla. The music is a bit too pop orientated for my tastes but not too cheesy either. Definitely worth a visit for any gay gals out there.

One of the few bars in the gay village that has a mainly lesbian clientele, Coyote’s is a very friendly place to go. The entry fee that applies mainly around weekends is reasonable, as are the prices of the drinks. The music is OK, a little bit too poppy for my tastes but much better than some of the places in the Village. There are a fair few seats and a super comfy sofa when you get to tired of doing your thang on the(slightly small) dance floor. Unlike some lesbian bars, this place seems OK with you having a couple of guys in your party. I get the impression that Coyote’s is a little bit of a pick up place, if you are a girl who looks like you might be single, be prepared to be chatted up, it happened to me a few times when I was there without my partner!

This is my favourite bar in The Village — I call it my ‘Local’. This is one of the few bars on Canal Street, where you will find a predominantly ‘female’ customer ;o) They have different themed nites & often have special offers on, for your alcoholic consumption. Its a very friendly atmosphere & a great place to chill out, play pool, catch up with friends, meet new friends & shake your booty, when you are up for it! :o) You can also watch many of the current football games. Charges for entry apply after certain times, particularly at week-ends. But once you’ve got ur ‘stamp’ — you are free to come & go, as you pleaseas long as you dont upset the Bouncer!!! Can get very crowded & hot, hot, hot — @ week-ends/Mardi Gras time! :o) …Enjoy!

There are numerous places to visit in the Village in Manchester and Coyotes is always on my list. This is predominantly a womens bar though men are welcome and there are always a few gay boys wriggling their butts somewhere. But usually its crammed to the rafters with gay girls and women. It’s quite a young crowd but not half as posey as Vanilla is and you won’t feel out of place if you’re the other side of 30. Music changes according to the night — can be dancey or souly or just plain cheesey. And I’ll forever love it because when i was there one pride and had lost my voice the manager made me the best hot toddy ever to get me better and didnt even charge me — awwww. Now how much more can you ask for? One gripe — those stairs — disabled access anyone? Friendly, welcoming, chaotic at times but always a good laugh
