There were some nice, interesting paintings on the walls of this pub, but they were quite hidden by the British flags(this was not during(or around the time of) Euro 2012 or the Olympics). This is quite a cosy, decent looking pub but they just didn’t really serve anything I would want to drink, Boddingtons keg being the most interesting, but ultimately unrewarding option. I didn’t even notice the Marilyn Monroe theme though. I guess I’m not the most observant.

Whenever I go to Monroes, I always have a wonderfully surreal night! Hidden away under Piccadilly Station, this kitsch hotel bar is packed with charm and Marilyn Monroe memorabilia — a combination that attracts some of Manchester’s most interesting characters. From spunky pensioners to Soul devotees on their way to Manchester’s legendary Twisted Wheel club, you’ll meet lots of cool people here, all with their own story to tell. There’s no real ale at Monroes and the prices are a little on the expensive side, but what else would you expect from a hotel bar? Anyway, when you visit this place, you don’t really care about what you’re drinking or even how much it costs it’s all about the atmosphere!

Marilyn Monroe fans, unite!!! Gather round, gather round a small building right opposite the Piccadilly train station, across the road from the Old Fire Station. The building houses a hotel, but the first thing you are going to encounter is a stupendous collection of Marilyn’s memorabilia in the form of diverse and sundry portraits, photographs, plates, and so on, and so forth. I’ve never stayed at the hotel itself, so cannot tell how good the rooms and service are. However, if you have a pleasant vertigo at the thought of Marilyn in the famous skirt-in-the-air episode, then Monroes is the place for you to go in for a pint or a glass of wine.

If you’re looking for decent but cheap accomodation in Manchester than I would highly recommend Monroes! We stayed for a night in the Marilyn themed bed and breakfast and would definitely go back. The hotel is ideally located just next to Piccadilly train station. Although the bar downstairs is showered with Monroe pictures and memorabilia, the bedrooms aren’t as overpowering. The bedroom we stayed in had a couple of Monroe pictures on the walls but don’t worry about having Monroe bed covers, it’s not that themed! The bedroom was clean and warm and had it’s own shower cubicle. The breakfast was tasty and plentiful. For less that £20 per person per night, we couldn’t have asked for better.
