«Breaking the law, breaking the law Breaking the law, breaking the law Breaking the law, breaking the law Breaking the law, breaking the law« Judas Priest must of visited this pub in his life time as he certainly knows what they are doing. As regular readers of my reviews and those familiar with the food industry will know, towards the end of last year that new legislation came in across the EU, where all restaurants have to provide dietary information on all dishes — Most chains have done this well, for example Domino’s now provide information on their website, Pizza Hut and many other companies provide information — but not this company. The Olde Boars Head is a historic pub, under the JW Lees franchise but as it has separate owners, they do not follow traditional JW Lees Menus, which does always have a waiter who can explain to me about gluten, but here? Her reaction was like it was some sort of Tahitian dish. This pub is very dark and with narrows doors and coming in straight to a unwelcoming to families bar, it certainly doesn’t strike me as a place to take the kids, and based on their attitude towards the law, don’t take yourselves either. Listen, I’m a strong eurosceptic but this law is vital for coeliacs like me to be able to eat out with confidence again, it may not work all the time, but more and more businesses are trying meanwhile this pub in particular is just sitting back and doing nothing, It is basically Middleton’s equivalent of Father Christmas in June, hence I feel one star is even far too deserving for this place.

The Olde Boars Head(please note the brewery, J.W. Lees, choose not to have an apostrophe, not me) is a Grade 2 listed building on Long Street Middleton. It was used as a coaching inn on the road between Chester and York and is believed to date back until at least 1632. The pub is reputed to be haunted, but is now more commonly known as a family pub with a lunch time carvery, but please note there is no food in the evenings. The charming black and white building has loads of interesting details and The staff are friendly, the pub has a reasonable amount of parking at the side, a beer garden at the back and a private function room.
