Whenever Valentines Day approaches or Father’s Day looms, I always ask my Mum for advice. What do I buy the men in my life who have it all? She always gives me the same answer«Cufflinks or a nice pen dear». Why is it that when we consider gifts for men, pens are always suggested? My theory is that men are prejudiced by the retail sector– there just isn’t enough choice for them. This makes buying gifts an arduous task when you have known a bloke for years and have already bought the CD’s, DVD’s, gadgets, belts, clothes and aftershave. Theory number 2 is that men wear suits and a high quality pen poking out of their breast pocket can be a status symbol. The Pen Shop sells the Ferraris of writing tools, no poor little Bic biros here love. The window display is crammed with gleaming pens arranged like trophies under spotlights. Brands such as «Bentley», «Cartier» and the obligatory«Mont Blanc» pose like playboys on the stands. There are gold plated studs, Swarovski crystal embedded cads, and Rhodium plated rudeboys all languishing next to discreet price tags with print so small you need a magnifying glass to see the it. And you don’t want to– £250 for a pen! This would be the biggest waste of money for me because I cannot look after a pen even for a minute. I pick one up and it vanishes from my literary fingers and always materialises under the settee. Anyway this is the shop to come if you really really want to invest in a writing instrument because the range is formidable. Not much for the girlies though– with the exception of the«Cherry Blossom», all the pens look ultra executive male and very Alan Sugar-in-the-boardroom. Luckily for me, this place does not ONLY sell pens. It has Filofaxes in beautiful leather of all colours for £75. Now this IS an investment and a shocking pink organiser would be much harder for me to lose than a pointless pen. The staff here are helpful and slightly too eager as if they haven’t made a sale all day and the shop is always empty. Mind you one sale here is equivalent to the cost of 10 dresses from New Look so I guess the Pen Shop does not need queues of customers to ensure its economic success. Are pricey pens just for posh people who don’t know what to spend their money on? The Pen Shop tries to dispel this myth but I am not exactly sure that I am convinced.

This shop is a great shop to buy gifts. if you’re looking to spend a fair bit. I was with my boyfriend the other day and he was looking to buy his boss a present, something nice. A pen seemed like a perfect idea and where better to head than The Pen Shop?! We found lots of lovely pens, a huge range, every type, every colour, a pen for every occassion. However they were RIDICULOUSLY expensive! I don’t know about you but I tend to think over £200 is an INSANE price for a pen?! Needless to say, we decided to shop around.

Well what can I say about this shop, they sellpens! A good place to go if you want a nice special gift for someone. They have a good range of pens at various price points so there is something to suit everyone’s budget. It’s a small shop but how big does a shop have to be to sell pens? The staff are friendly & helpful & the shop is clean & tidy.
