Qila Khyber comes with glowing recommendations as a top favourite and regular haunt of Manchester’s curry café and kebab lunch blog specialists Flavours of Manchester. I will definitely return here soon for a full meal and review — so save your compliments for that — but initial impressions are excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed my dessert plate of gajar(carrot) halva and semolina halva(£2) — a traditional sweetened rice dish featuring dates and blanched almonds was also available. Very few curry cafés have made a go of desserts, and the innovative cooking of both savoury and sweet dishes puts Qila Khyber ahead of the competition. The Pakistani owner is a warm and friendly host, and I appreciated him taking the time to sit and talk with me during the post-lunchtime lull. Your attentive host is smartly dressed in a waistcoat, and the décor is a bit more elegant than the average curry café with upholstered leather seating — so this is a nice place to bring your shalwar kameez-clad wife to give her a break from the cooking! I’m looking forward to eating here again — local Unilocalers, message me if you’d like to join me!
