If you don’t mind cheap and cheerful food, then look no further than Zains Krispy Chicken on Wilmslow Road. I first discovered Zains during Freshers Week, when I was handed a menu as I walked down Oxford Road. At first, I dismissed it, although in time I have come to appreciate its good, cheap pizzas, chicken and the obligatory French fries. The best thing about Zains is the student menu. It really is phenomenal value. A 7″ Margherita is £1. 2 pieces of chicken and fries is £1. Everything on the extensive menu is £1, and it is worth every penny. The food is hot, cooked and actually, not by any means bad(unless you are counting the fat content). Zains is one of the best value fast food places in Manchester, and it is wonderful that they don’t compromise on quality for price. The takeaway itself has a few tables with comfortable, high backed chairs, and is fitted with modern counter and appliances. It is by no means an uncomfortable place to wait for, or eat food, and the staff are always helpful with your order. In terms of delivery, they are prompt, fast, and also carry change, which is an added bonus. I recommend you try it the next time you only have £1!!!

It would get to that point in the week again, Wednesday usually but Thursday if we were lucky, when we would run out of plates and knives and forks. We would be buttering toast with the back of a spoon and eating it out of a roasting tin. That’s normally when we would order a Zain’s. Any three pizzas for £10, three of us living there. One of my housemates studied physics but he didn’t need to tell me how that one worked out — £3.333 recurring each. They were decent pizzas too, Dominos style; with the thin base where the toppings were and those big doafy, dippable crusts. And big, 12 inches — easily enough to save for breakfast. You’ll need to do that too because there’s probably something growing in the cereal bowls by now. Interestingly enough I never got chicken from Zain’s, despite being its namesake, though I have heard good things. Maybe I’ll have to give them another ring, you don’t need plates or cutlery for fried chicken either — right?

In a random contrast to many of the other chicken takeaways around Manchester, this one is named after what I assume is a person, rather than an American state. I don’t know who Zain is, nor do I know if he has any particular expertise in making chicken, but I must grudgingly admit he makes pretty decent stuff. Now, it’s nothing amazing, but given the general standard of chicken diners around here I have to give it a stamp of approval. Although it’s a bit like calling Jenny Éclair the funniest comedienne if all the others just threw acid into your face during the act.

Never seen or heard the mention of a zain in here before, but his chicken is good. This poultry palace is home to a good selection of chicken rolled in flour and fried in batter. The feel is a bit more slick then the slap bang diners apparent elsewhere and the chicken cheap and cheerful. Lots of people can’t get enough of the fried chicken places around the curry mile and I can understand its good food. But isn’t the curry mile about well the alternatives? These chicken places are popping up left, right and centre with a strong following. Shame but are well, back to the takeaway, nice chicken and chips for a filthy lunch or post piss up nibble as its open late.
