Good selection of beers on tap, and bottled, and when my less-knowledgeable friend went up to the bar and simply ordered ‘a beer’, it was very amusing to see that she had to whittle it down by type, country and various other factors so that he could serve her, because the selection was so vast! However, it was a little pricey(London prices, easily), and the kitchen wasn’t open for food at 8.30pm, which seems a little early to stop serving — we weren’t looking for a full dinner, but even hot snacks were off the menu, and so we had to leave to eat in small groups and come back to join our friends, which wasn’t great. A nice ambience and a good selection of alcohol, but not somewhere you’d go for some chips and a reasonably-priced drink!

Always great beers on tap. Changed frequently. Lots of choice.

Every time I visit my mate in Newcastle, we gravitate towards here. Either for a quick pint(that never stays at just one) or to end the night on a good note, and it never disappoints. A fantastic range of real ales and bottled beers, helpful and friendly staff, and tons of comfy seats all around — even some spaces outside to take in the breeze and sunshine on those rare occasions that we get them. This is the kind of place I would consider my local if I lived nearer to it, and got out more often. One of my favourites in Newcastle, by far.

Great bar with a huge selection of bottled beers and a decent selection on tap too. I’ve always found the bar staff to be knowledgeable and helpful in finding the right drink in that choice. Part of the Head of Steam Group so the atmosphere is pretty similar to their other bars(The Cluny and The Head of Steam) with what is usually a really pleasant mix of people. Really convenient for the theatre next door but just a little distant from the other good bars in town. Sometimes this is just what you want though!

Good selection of beer and defo recommend the Cumberland sausage and mash and it’s well well well worth the £4.50, absolutely fantastic and that’s from me, a tough cookie to crack

another one of them passable bars that isn’t essential to me but a place that i would visit all the same. it’s just down from the academy so i’ve been in here a few times before going to a has an itbox which i always get stuck into when i’m in here and it does play some great music. the prices are average but reasonable. it’s not out of the way so it’s always a bar i consider going to when in the area.

A very small bar located 30 seconds(50 metres) from the Carling Academy. This bar gets crowded before gigs and theatre productions, since it’s joined onto The Journal Tyne Theatre. Tilley’s is owned by the same landlord as The Head Of Steam and The Cluny so you can expect the same drinks and the same faces. One of the few bars in Newcastle to sell Sailor Jerries mmm. This place has a fairly modern interior and is less studenty than The Head Of Steam. The staff are friendly and the music is played at reasonable volumes.
