This über cool, independent coffee shop is hidden away beneath a hippie crystal shop and takes a bit of finding. It is, however, worth the hunt as it is a great little place to hang out for a cuppa and have some great food. It reminds me of being below decks in a wooden pleasure cruiser. I’m not a coffee-head so I can’t comment on how good the coffee is, but the barista-owner obviously takes this very seriously and there is an array of beans and roasts to satisfy the most ardent coffee nerd. The recent addition of good food is really welcome– the salads and sourdough toasties are excellent. I had a spectacular falafel, pear and haloumi salad which is worth trying when you go. Free wi-fi performs well as this is now a must-have if owners want people to hang around for a while(and drink more coffee). Only minus points are that it gets a bit hot down there when it is full. Lovely staff.

A proper little coffee house. Decent flat white served up in a unique environment. It’s a friendly place set in a strange setting. in the basement of a jewellery shop. Looked a decent food menu too. On my visit there weren’t many customers but the atmosphere was still there. I will return, as I would expect any coffee lover who visits.

I didn’t think I could possibly write a review that does justice to how I feel about this place, but here is my attempt: Flat Caps Coffee is a special place(and now award winning!), there’s nothing like it in Newcastle. You can find Joe’s personal touch in everything, from the little details about the coffee he’s about to serve you to the delicious toasties and pastries he’s made himself. Listen to him talk about coffee, and you’ll see his knowledge, passion, and dedication to his craft shine through. Being a regular here has completely changed the way I experience coffee, opening up my palate to subtleties I had never noticed before. Even though there is little advertising, people often find their way here by word of mouth. Since the place has opened, I’ve seen more and more regulars coming by and I know it’s for the same reasons as mine: there are certainly many other places to get coffee in the area, but nothing comes even close to the quality of offerings or personable service of Flat Caps.

Great little coffee shop hidden in the basement of Elula. Makes the best coffees I’ve ever had, served by the passionate and informative Joe. The place has a lovely, quirky ambience that you will not find anywhere else in Newcastle and is a great place to sit and relax with a great cup of coffee, tea, or whatever else suits your fancy!(but to me, the coffee is the main attraction). I’ll definitely be returning soon as there’s nowhere else quite like it.

Great little shop hidden down in the basement. Hard to find but when you do you’ll find yourself coming back time and time again. Try their individual filter cups and lattes decorated with rosettas. Joe, ‘Mr Flat Cap’ is a dedicated Barista and an all round nice chap to boot. A must visit if you are looking for good coffee in Newcastle.

amazingly indulgent hot chocolate, fab laid back atmosphere. a hidden gem, in the basement of an equally fab gift shop. If you are passionate about good coffee, this is the place to go in Newcastle. Bonus is the free wifii. I could hide my self away for hours…
