Staying here with 3 other single adults for a Rugby World Cup trip to Newcastle from Edinburgh. We booked 9 months in advance and got the last family room available as town is pretty chocka with rugby fans. The family room consisted of a double, a single, a stretcher bed, an ensuite and not much in the way of any other space. Bernie was very welcoming, friendly helpful and quickly became our best friend. Another staff member was particularly casual when telling us that she didn’t usually work behind the bar when the Guinness failed to come out of the tap and when I asked if she knew how to use the coffee machine, she suggested instant… cider it is in. The hotel in West Jesmond, was on the popular hotel/bar strip and we were surprised to arrive home about 11pm to find the bar absolutely packed. It seems it is not just the hotel guests that frequent the bar. It was surprisingly quiet on the top floor where our room was, just a bit of noise from through the windows. The bar soon cleared out at midnight closing though. The full breakfast and continental hit the spot in the morning — about as expected. The hotel was adequate for our needs, but I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone staying any longer than a couple of nights or anyone looking for luxury or a quiet stay.

It had it’s own Restaurant called the El Castano. However we didn’t eat there, we went down the road think it was called Polo, and had an Italian meal. The room was a bit manky :(

Located on the edge of OSborne Road in JEsmond, Newcastle, the modestly sized Kenilworth Hotel has its ups and downs. The hotel seems to be owned and run by a friendly couple, who also serve and manage the spanish bar restaurant downstairs. The menu seemed enticing but when I was finally prepared for dinner and came downstairs I only found the lights out and the premise locked up. The room itself was fairly spatious, with large windows and pleasant furnishing. I did find the surfaces quite dusty even by my standards, and several sticky stains on the coffee table. We also had a problem with the shower — the water was cold, and despite the owners reassurance that it was just a routine(!?) temporary cut, it never turned hot. On the upside they seem to have good availability and are very friendly and helpful.
