This is a nice way to spend the afternoon but definitely not for the faint hearted. Can get a bit crowded especially around the edges. It could do with a bit of decorating as it is a bit tatty. There is a café as well but personally I would avoid it. Can be long queues whilst you are waiting to get your skates and return them.

The Ice Rink is a local institution and most of the local kids grew up in the place. Sadly, the days of top concerts being held here are long gone. Hard to believe now but in the days before Newcastle Arena was built it was not rare to see the likes of Take That and Oasic playing gigs here.
From the outside it looks like it could do with a good lick of paint but you come along for the ice, the décor does not matter. I have been here many times over the years and still have not learnt to skate (my own fault; too scared to take my hands off the barrier) and it humbles you to see five year olds whizzing past you. it’s cheap and cheerful and you get a disco. What more could you want?

If you’re feeling energetic then why not make a fool of yourself and attempt to keep your balance. Remember, when you fall over keep your fingers tucked in. Decapatated fingers don’t work properly. That said, this place is great on a morning where there aren’t many people around that you have to watch out for. You get a real mixed crowd here, from 6 year old kids who could skate for the Olympics, to groups of friends who are skating for fun. The size of the rink is big enough so you won’t feel claustrophobic and ‘trapped under ice’. Skate hire is available and prices are reasonable. This is a friendly, fun place to be.
