Newport is a no-nonsense sort of city, not really meant for the prim or proper. The Riverside Tavern definitely abides by such notions, particularly in its self-explanatory location-betraying title: it’s a functional tavern bar overlooking the murky depths of the River Usk(and overlooked itself by the main railway line). Buzzing with a surprising local vibe for somewhere so close to the city centre, the drinks selections keep things simple, but accordingly aren’t usually bank breakers. Slightly unusually, although the Riverside has the facilities to put on small-scale pub gigs itself, many drinkers will link it hand-in-hand associative tandem with one of Newport’s most famous venues: TJ’s. Since the latter sadly closed, though, the Riverside’s handy proximity as a destination to get lagered up before a punk-rock gig for many has been cruelly snatched away. How much of an effect that has on the Riverside Tavern’s continuing trade may remain to be seen.

The Riverside Tavern in Newport just over the bridge used to be one of my favorite pubs in Newport whilst i was attending a training course years ago in the next building. Having not been there in years can only review what i used to thing of it. Warm friendly welcome that did great food which i frequently use to eat during lunch times. Being on a training course income money was tight but you could have reasonable hot meal for a great price. Come Friday me and the class used to use this pub to have a few and the atmosphere completly changes and it became a lively fun pub. Parking at the time(too young to drive at the time) wasnt a problem but im not sure if the carpark now belongs to Iceland, if not there is a multi storey carpark if you dont mind paying.

A place for reasonably priced alcohol, it has a pool table and is right next to the river running through Newport(hence the name ‘Riverside Tavern’). It tends to have a more alternative crowd, with a wide range of clientele ranging from 18yr olds up to 60 yr olds. The music is more Indie/Rock and the interior is like an odl tavern, with dark wood table and chairs. They have live bands throughout the week and sometimes weekends(mostly unsigned). The Riverside Tavern tends to be a warm up place for those heading across the road to the legendary T.J.s Nightclub.
