I find the flavour of the ice cream just on the good side of ok. Yes, I know it’s an institution and my old memory of this place was that the ice cream was much more tasty way back but who knows. I’m the generation that had Harry Galway’s ice cream, which he made in the kitchen of his terraced house and this was a lifetime ago and I recall too Scappaticci’s ice cream. I now much prefer Maud’s but that’s personal taste. We went in on a Sunday afternoon. The place has a bit of character. There’s just two small tables of two seats each if you want to sit — in and there isn’t great deal of room to sit down. There were dozens of glass jars full of sweets. The happy customers never stopped coming through the door while we queued up, the service is ace friendly, the ice cream portions are generous and the prices are very competitive.

YESYESYES!!! Who the hell decided ice cream was bad for you? I think Timoneys should be re classed as one of the essential food groups, along side chocolate and pizza(not all together though) Timoneys is an old old old institution in Newry, renowned for fabulous ice cream, a secret recipe apparently. I wonder do those who know the recipe never travel together like the CEOs of coke used to do in case there was an accident and the recipe would be forever lost? Food for thought. Well this place ROCKS! It is classed as a sweet shop but lets face it all you go in there for is the ice cream, and a quarter of rhubarb and custards just cos you’re there. Buttery, creamy and delicious, every spoonful increasing your desire for more of the sweet icy goodness, savouring its texture before it melts and you again dip your spoon into this nectar of the Gods. Can you tell I love it?
